POSITION SUMMARY:

The Sous Chef at Melvyn’s Restaurant is responsible for supporting the Chef de Cuisine in overseeing kitchen operations, ensuring the preparation of high-quality dishes, and leading kitchen staff. This role requires exceptional culinary skills, leadership, and a passion for delivering outstanding dining experiences to our guests. The Sous Chef will also be involved in menu planning, inventory management, and maintaining cleanliness and safety standards in the kitchen.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven experience as a Sous Chef or in a similar culinary leadership role.
  • Exceptional culinary skills, with an understanding of food presentation, preparation, and cooking techniques.
  • Strong leadership and organizational abilities with experience in leading a kitchen team.
  • Strong knowledge of food safety and hygiene standards and a commitment to maintaining them.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle the demands of a fast-paced kitchen environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with both kitchen and front-of-house teams.
  • A creative approach to menu development and a keen eye for food trends.
  • Culinary degree or equivalent professional experience preferred.
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish is preferred.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in kitchen management: Help the Head Chef in overseeing daily kitchen operations, including the preparation, cooking, and presentation of food.
  • Menu planning and development: Collaborate with the Head Chef in developing, testing, and refining seasonal menus to ensure innovation and quality.
  • Team leadership and training: Supervise, train, and mentor kitchen staff to ensure high standards of food preparation, hygiene, and safety. Foster teamwork and ensure the team maintains peak performance.
  • Quality control: Monitor food quality at every stage of preparation and cooking, ensuring that all dishes are consistent with Melvyn’s quality standards.
  • Inventory and ordering: Manage kitchen inventory, ensuring that ingredients are fresh, properly stored, and available as needed. Assist with ordering supplies and managing food costs.
  • Health and safety compliance: Ensure that all kitchen operations comply with health and safety regulations, including food hygiene, sanitation, and workplace safety standards.
  • Ensure smooth service: Work with front-of-house staff to ensure that food orders are prepared and delivered in a timely and efficient manner, especially during peak service hours.
  • Assist in staff scheduling: Help create and manage the kitchen staff schedule, ensuring proper coverage for shifts.
  • Maintain kitchen cleanliness: Ensure the kitchen is kept clean and always organized, in accordance with health and safety standards.
  • Additional duties as assigned by management.
