We’re looking for a passionate and experienced Sous Chef to support the Head Chef in delivering high-quality, home-cooked food using fresh, local ingredients. As a key member of our award-winning kitchen team at the Old Railway Line Garden Centre, you’ll help lead daily operations, inspire your team, and ensure smooth, efficient service. This is a hands-on role ideal for someone with strong leadership skills, culinary creativity, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of food quality, hygiene, and customer satisfaction.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Proven experience within a busy kitchen as a similar role
  • We require you to work most bank holidays and weekends on a rota basis
  • Good customer skills and the ability to deal with the public
  • Outstanding communication and leadership skills
  • Well presented. High standards of personal and working hygiene within the allocated areas as required by the Food Hygiene Regulations
  • Credentials in culinary training

Responsibilities
  • The Sous Chef will support the Head Chef in the day to day running of the kitchen. When the Head Chef is absent the Sous Chef will be in command of the kitchen.
  • Leading the team to ensure efficient running of the kitchen, including monitoring timely completion of tasks, and ensuring break times run smoothly.
  • Control and direct the food preparation process and any other relevant activities
  • Assist in constructing menus ensuring the variety and quality and value for money of the servings
  • Inspect supplies, equipment, and work areas to ensure conformance to relevant standards and arrange repairs when necessary and remedy any problems or defects.
  • Order supplies and ingredients needed to ensure efficient operation when required
  • Check quality and quantity of raw ingredients
  • Passionate about preparing and cooking foods of all types and introducing new ideas
  • Record production and operational data on specified forms when required
