POSITION OVERVIEW

Temporary Part-time, Adult Education Instructor - Spanish Citizenship Preparation: The Spanish Citizenship Instructor teaches citizenship preparation classes in Spanish and in-person to adult property service workers (primarily janitors) in community-based classroom settings. Classes focus on U.S history, civics, and government, while preparing students for the naturalization interview and civics exam. Instruction is delivered in Spanish and is designed to build knowledge, confidence, and readiness for naturalization process.
Classes are learner-centered and serve 10-20 adult learners with varied educational and literacy backgrounds. Curriculum will be provided, and instructors will receive training and a review of the curriculum before classes begin. Instructors are expected to adapt materials and create engaging activities appropriate for learners with varied educational backgrounds and literacy levels.
The instructor will complete minimal administrative work in a timely fashion. Administrative duties may include, but are not limited to, maintaining class attendance and assessment records, completing timesheets on time, distributing flyers to students about additional educational opportunities, weekly check-in with class coordinator, and completing other BSP paperwork as necessary.
Teaching schedule for this position is Fridays from 11:00am-1:30pm in Santa Ana. The class begins Friday, September 5th.
This is a part time temporary position, dependent on hours and class availability. This position will not include benefits.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • TESOL Certificate OR equivalent teaching experience required.
  • Spanish fluency is required; bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English strongly preferred
  • M.A. in TESOL/TEFL and / or California Adult Ed Teaching Credential is highly preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum one to two years classroom-based instruction with adult learners and/or beginner learners.
  • Instructors must be able to address diverse student needs in a multilevel classroom.
  • Experience teaching citizenship preparation, civics, U.S government curriculum strongly preferred.
  • Experience with multilevel or low-literacy students is a plus.
  • Experience developing learner-centered, engaging lessons for adult students is also a plus.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Spanish fluency is required; ability to communicate in English with staff is helpful.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice.
  • Engaging and energetic with an ability to connect with people of other cultures and backgrounds; exceptional people skills and cultural sensitivity are essential.
  • Flexibility, strong organization, and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work with and incorporate volunteers into the classroom.
  • Reliable means of transportation and ability to teach in person.
  • Ability to work well independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to comply with administrative duties in a timely and efficient manner.
    As a guideline, BSP adheres to all state and federal laws. BSP enforces a policy mandating all new employees provide proof of vaccination or a religious/ medical exemption. If an employee has an exemption, they will be required to wear a mask and send a negative test to HR during any in person events.
