Job Details Job Location: Madison Heights, VA 24572 General Position Summary: The Spanish Language Specialist (SLS) serves as a vital link between Johnson Health Center and the local Hispanic community. The SLS functions as an interpreter between the Hispanic community and JHC to ensure the integrity and continuity of care across JHC services. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Interprets in-person, telephonically, and electronically to facilitate communication with Spanish-speaking patients. 2. Communicates with patients in a courteous and professional manner in face-to-face encounters and via the telephone. 3. Schedules appointments and verifies all demographic information and insurance. 4. Interviews, evaluates, and follows up with the patient and/or family to determine the patient fee scale, as necessary. 5. Assists Spanish-speaking patients in completing paperwork. 6. Works with multiple JHC departments to communicate medical results, appointments, referrals, etc. 7. Maintains a resource file of available social service agencies and Spanish-speaking assistance providers in the community to refer patients in the future. 8. Physical attendance is an essential element of the job and necessary to perform the essential functions of the job. 9. Performs related duties as assigned by supervisor, including, but not limited to, JHC-hosted events, fundraisers, and specific patient demographic outreach. Other Functions: 1. Ability to work effectively with all levels of administrative and professional personnel and to collaborate with a team to creatively anticipate and solve challenges. 2. Physical Demand and Working Environment: Fast-paced office setting with travel to other offices often. Lifting and/or exerting force up to 25 pounds occasionally, with frequently moving of objects. Work requires speaking, sitting, bending, walking, standing, hearing, and stooping, kneeling, and repetitive motion with certain activities. Numerous hours of constant computer usage. OSHA low-risk position. Qualifications Must be able to speak and write fluently in Spanish and English. High School diploma or equivalent. Certified medical translator preferred. If not currently certified, then must obtain certification within 6 months of employment. Working knowledge of MS Office products and the ability to learn other computer-related applications, such as electronic medical records. Working knowledge of office equipment, i.e., scanners, printers, copy machines, telephone system, fax machine. Must be able to excel in a team-oriented setting and promote the core values of Johnson Health Center. Ability to communicate in a positive, cheerful manner with all patients, staff, and vendors. Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable insured transportation required.
Responsibilities
The Spanish Language Specialist interprets for Spanish-speaking patients to facilitate communication with healthcare providers. They also assist with scheduling appointments and ensuring proper documentation is completed.
