POSITION SUMMARY

The Special Education Liaison serves as a key specialist supporting the evaluation of students regarding academic achievement, development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and compliance with state and federal special education regulations. The Liaison works collaboratively with building-based teams, educators, administrators, and families to ensure students with disabilities receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE). This position will carry a caseload of students, grades ranging from K - 12, but will not be the primary educator for the caseload. Alternatively, they will be responsible for the IEPs and will consult with the primary educator and other team members.

Conduct academic achievement evaluations for students referred for special education eligibility and reevaluation.

  • Analyze evaluation results and prepare comprehensive written reports with clear instructional recommendations.
  • Serve as a member of evaluation teams, contributing professional expertise in interpreting assessment data

Provide consultation to educators, related service providers, and school leaders on evidence-based instructional strategies for students with disabilities.

  • Work closely with district and building-level staff to support inclusive practices and ensure access to the general education curriculum.
  • Communicate regularly with families to foster positive, collaborative relationships and ensure understanding of evaluation results and IEP content

Responsibilities
  • Evaluation and Assessment

Conduct academic achievement evaluations for students referred for special education eligibility and reevaluation.

  • Serve as a member of evaluation teams, contributing professional expertise in interpreting assessment data.

    • IEP Development and Compliance

Draft high-quality, compliant IEPs that align with evaluation findings, state standards, and district expectations.

  • Collaborate with teachers, specialists, and administrators to develop meaningful, measurable goals and appropriate accommodations/modifications.
  • Ensure all IEP documentation meets federal (IDEA) and Massachusetts special education regulations, including timelines under 603 CMR 28.00.
  • Participate in and/or chair IEP Team meetings, facilitating discussions that center on student needs and family engagement.

    • Collaboration and Support

Provide consultation to educators, related service providers, and school leaders on evidence-based instructional strategies for students with disabilities.

Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential student records in compliance with FERPA.

  • Participate in professional development and contribute to district-wide special education initiatives.
