The Special Education Teacher provides individualized, school-based special education services to students in grades K–8 at Santa Rosa Day School in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) regulations. The position is responsible for delivering specialized instruction, managing student caseloads, developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and BIE requirements. The Special Education Teacher supports student academic, behavioral, and developmental progress through evidence-based instructional practices, culturally responsive approaches, and collaboration with school staff, families, and multidisciplinary teams. The role ensures students receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) and supports the school’s mission of providing inclusive, culturally relevant education aligned with Arizona state standards and the traditions of the Tohono O’odham Nation. Requirements Essential Duties and Responsibilities. Instruction and Direct Student Services Provide specialized instruction using evidence-based teaching strategies appropriate for students with disabilities. Develop and implement daily lesson plans aligned with student IEP goals and Arizona academic standards. Continuously assess and monitor student academic, behavioral, and developmental progress and adjust instructional methods accordingly. Utilize instructional technologies and platforms, including Schoology, to support student learning and engagement. Create and maintain a structured classroom environment that promotes positive behavior and student success. Select, administer, and interpret formal and informal student assessments to guide instruction. Case Management and IEP Implementation Serve as case manager for assigned students and oversee all aspects of IEP implementation and compliance. Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs, ensuring services are delivered in accordance with IDEA timelines and requirements. Maintain accurate student records, service logs, and documentation in the Native American Student Information System (NASIS). Facilitate IEP meetings, including meetings with parents, school staff, and multidisciplinary team members. Prepare progress reports and communicate student progress to families and school staff. Collaboration and Consultation Collaborate with general education teachers, administrators, and related service providers to support student needs. Provide consultation and training to educators on strategies for supporting students with disabilities. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, staff meetings, and professional development activities. Support culturally responsive educational practices that honor the traditions and values of Native American communities served by the school. Child Find, Compliance, and Documentation Participate in Child Find activities to identify students who may require special education services. Complete evaluation reports, service documentation, compliance reports, and required administrative records. Maintain accurate service logs and documentation in accordance with federal, state, and BIE requirements. Ensure timely completion of all compliance-related tasks, including evaluations, progress reporting, and documentation. Family and Community Engagement Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, behavior, and educational plans. Participate in parent-teacher conferences and IEP meetings. Support family engagement and culturally responsive practices aligned with the school’s mission. Minimum Qualifications Education and Licensure Master’s degree or higher in Special Education from an accredited institution. Valid Arizona Special Education teaching certification and licensure appropriate for grades K–8, or eligible to obtain licensure prior to start. Must meet Arizona Department of Education certification requirements. Required Experience Minimum of three (3) years of experience providing school-based special education services. Demonstrated experience developing and implementing IEPs and managing special education caseloads. Preferred Experience Experience working in Bureau of Indian Education schools or schools serving Native American communities. Experience working with culturally diverse student populations. Experience conducting functional behavioral assessments and developing behavior intervention plans. Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and related service providers. Additional Employment Requirements Must successfully pass and maintain a Bureau of Indian Education federal background investigation and suitability determination prior to beginning services. Must maintain active licensure and certifications throughout the duration of employment. Work Location Services must be provided onsite at Santa Rosa Day School, located in Sells, Arizona. Remote work is not permitted except for limited administrative duties during school closure events when authorized. Work Schedule Core working hours are typically Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, aligned with the school’s academic calendar. Direct instructional services generally occur during the student instructional day. Additional hours may be required for meetings, evaluations, family engagement, compensatory education services, or professional development. Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout classrooms and school facilities for extended periods. Ability to sit for extended periods while completing documentation and administrative tasks. Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and equipment up to 25 pounds. Ability to supervise students and respond appropriately to behavioral and safety situations. Ability to use computers and educational technology systems for documentation and instruction. Work Environment Work is performed in a school environment serving students with disabilities in grades K–8. Must maintain confidentiality and comply with all federal and agency privacy regulations.
