Description

NWI Precision specializes in high-precision machining of helicopter masts, turbine shafts, engine thrust links, and nuclear pressure vessel components used in the aerospace and nuclear industries worldwide. NWI Precision’s 120,000 sq. ft. facility is located at 9 Fenmar Drive in Toronto. Our dedicated team prides themselves on delivering the highest quality products, to specifications and on time. NWI Precision is currently seeking a Special Processes Specialist.
The Special Processes Specialist will be responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of critical manufacturing processes, including Heat Treatment, Surface Enhancement, Conventional Machining (as a special process), Balancing, and Nital Etch. The ideal candidate will have deep technical knowledge, a strong understanding of quality systems (e.g., AS9100, NADCAP), and a proven ability to troubleshoot and improve processes. This position requires hands-on involvement, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

EDUCATION:

  • University degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or similar discipline.
  • ASQ certifications such as CQE, CQM, CQA preferred

EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE:

  • 5 years work experience in highly regulated quality environment
  • 5 years in precision machining
  • 2 years direct experience in special processes (HT, peening, balance, etc
  • Experience in aerospace/automotive or nuclear settings preferred
  • Deep understanding of RCCA/8D corrective action process required
  • Familiarity with AS 9100 / TS 16949 / N299 quality system requirements
  • Experience in Lean and Six Sigma is a plus (Certifications an asset)
  • Strong knowledge of PPAP, APQP, FMEA etc. or Nuclear methodologies preferred
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office – World, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • ERP exposure an asset

Responsibilities
  • Ensure all special processes are compliant with internal quality standards, customer requirements, and industry specifications (e.g., AS9100, NADCAP, AMS, MIL-STD).
  • Support First Article Inspection Reporting (FAIR) processes, including submissions to customers and maintain change control verification.
  • Implement methods to inspect, test and evaluate the reliability of manufacturing processes, products and production equipment.
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for special processes during internal, customer, and third-party audits (e.g., NADCAP).
  • Work in conjunction with Quality, Engineering and Operations to ensure that required quality controls are implemented and followed.
  • Develop, document, and maintain detailed work instructions and procedures for all assigned special processes.
  • Effectively lead cross-disciplinary technical teams, driving collaboration and timely execution of audit, training and project initiatives.
  • Conduct regular process audits to ensure compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Analyze and interpret metallurgical data, including hardness testing and microstructure evaluation, to confirm process effectiveness.
  • Maintain and calibrate peening equipment and monitor Almen strips for accuracy.
  • Work with machinists and programmers to ensure process controls are in place to meet special requirements.
  • Interpret balancing data and ensure components meet specified balance tolerances.
  • Train and certify technicians in the proper execution and interpretation of Nital Etch results.
  • Collect data and analyze failures, conduct RCA and implement corrective and preventive actions to respond to existing and potential operational issues.
  • Create and maintain company quality documentation such as quality standards and QA related reports. Lead training sessions in support of those standards.
  • Assist with the management of the AS9100 Quality Management System, including conducting training and documentation reviews and audits.
  • Assist managers or senior leaders with KPI tracking/reporting and support customer visits to NWI for product or process reviews.
