Description

OVERVIEW

As Special Projects Deputy Editor for PocketGamer.com’s adjacent sites (including TheSimsNews.com, AppSpy.com, 148Apps and future, new launches), you will play a key role in creating, editing, commissioning, and producing daily written content across these platforms.
These sites serve specific gaming communities with tips, news, features, and game recommendations. This full-time role involves working closely with the editor-in-chief to publish timely and regular content, maintain and grow site traffic and community engagement, and establish a respected status for these platforms in the games industry.
You will monitor site traffic metrics using SEO principles and work with management to meet company traffic targets. In the editor-in-chief’s absence, you will oversee these sites and projects to ensure continuity of editorial output. The role may involve collaboration with the sales team on ad opportunities and with the events team around the running and delivery of awards, and other initiatives.
These sites are all quite limited in scale at the moment, however through this role we intend to develop and grow them. As such your responsibilities and the budgets and team that you manage may change over time. This is a great opportunity for somebody looking to develop both their leadership and editorial abilities, as well as to help define and grow brands within an existing network.

Responsibilities
  • Write content for PocketGamer.com’s partner sites as planned with the editor-in-chief, current expectation is to raise each of the partner sites to 2-3 daily posts.
  • Plan, commission, and edit content (e.g., guides from freelancers) for these sites on a daily basis
  • Manage output from freelancers within a fixed budget, in conjunction with the editor-in-chief
  • Manage and liaise with other team members regularly, likely leading that communication
  • Produce (create or commission) target levels of content defined by the editor-in-chief and SM company directors
  • Ensure all work adheres to each site’s editorial style guide
  • Regularly liaise with other staff members to foster good cross-team communication for sharing knowledge, ideas, and best practices
  • Help the editor-in-chief devise editorial strategy through available tools (Google Analytics, heat maps, feedback)
  • Identify potential technical and editorial improvements to sites in the b2c portfolio
  • Identify potential future partnerships and opportunities for these platforms
  • Promote and represent the sites to a high professional standard in all communications
  • Stay on top of developments in relevant gaming sectors and respond strategically with content ideas
  • Work with the ad team to deliver paid content within Steel Media’s editorial guidelines
  • Attend agreed events and engage with developer and reader communities
  • Identify, manage, and create social media opportunities to grow and engage the reader communities
  • Cover for the editor-in-chief during absences, which may include commissioning, editing, uploading stories, and being responsible for site output on other sites and platforms in the network
  • Monitor site traffic and use Google Analytics 4 or SEO tools as needed
  • Occasionally provide content for other sites within the Steel Media Network
