About us | Mō mātou Here at Digital Services, we are responsible for the provision, maintenance, and support of information and communication technologies and business systems within the University of Otago community. We are one of the largest ICT operations in NZ, supporting 27,000 users, a big network across multiple campuses and a huge range of systems. The role | Te mahi As our Digital Threat Specialist you’ll monitor and respond to online threats targeting the University’ brand, staff, and information assets across platforms including social media, forums, and the dark web. Using intelligence tools and investigative techniques, the role identifies and addresses risks such as impersonation, misinformation, and staff abuse. Working closely with security, legal, communications and affected individuals, the specialist ensures early threat detection, effective incident response, and promotes online safety through education and collaboration. Key responsibilities include: • Analysis of information for threat intelligence requirements. • Collaborating with other specialists to ensure advice given is appropriate to their needs. • Protecting the digital well-being of the University’s staff. • Communicating security risks and issues to business managers and other teams. • Mapping threats to the organisation to improve threat detection and response. Skills and experience | Kā pūkeka me kā wheako Essential: • Tertiary qualification in Computer Science or relevant field. • Interest in threat intelligence field and security event monitoring. • Understanding of information security fundamentals, vulnerability assessments, and cyber hygiene best practices. • Experience in Microsoft cloud environments. • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills. • Experience delivering digital threat awareness and training to diverse audiences. Preferred: • Postgraduate qualifications or certifications (e.g. Security+, CYSA+, CIA). • Experience with ITIL or other service management frameworks. • Understanding of Security frameworks (NIST, CIS, NZISM) and the Mitre ATT&CK framework. • Familiarity with Te Reo, tikanga and mātauranga Māori in a workplace context. Further details | Pūroko This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), permanent position, we have a strong preference that the role is located in Dunedin, however we will consider remote work. The appointment range for this role is $73,583 to $79,682 per annum. Top of the range is $84,253. You must have the right to live and work in New Zealand to apply for this position. Candidates who successfully reach the final stages of the selection process for this role will be required to undergo criminal convictions screening. A satisfactory report from the relevant agency will be a condition of employment.
