Job Title: Specialist - ESOL Teaching Specialist Position Function: The purpose of the ESOL Teaching Specialist is to monitor and ensure compliance with district, state and federal ESOL regulations and best practices ensuring that all functions are aligned with WPS visions, goals, and initiatives in connection with curriculum, instruction, and assessment leading to increased student achievement. Employee Punctuality and Appearance: Employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received prior approved leave All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for their position All employees are required to report to work at scheduled times, prepared for all duties and responsibilities Additional Duties: Assists with additional duties as assigned by supervisor. Equipment: Must be able to use basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machines. Travel: Limited travel may be required. Physical and Mental Demands: Work in school building environments Must be able to walk long distances Respond rapidly in emergency situations Additional demands upon request of Supervisor Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Background knowledge and experience in teaching elementary students Familiar with district standards and assessments Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, both internally within the local district, and externally with the community Organizational and planning skills for setting both short term and long range goals, and for coordinating efforts for timely accomplishment of those goals Interpersonal skills Proficiency in problem solving and willingness to perform a variety of tasks Ability to work independently with little or no supervision Ability to perform a variety of tasks and work in a calm and efficient manner Interrelations: Strong interpersonal skills Builds and maintains constructive and effective relationships Contact with personnel within the district and with external customers and vendors Work performed under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day-to-day tasks Work with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy Must maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality. Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service Essential Performance Responsibilities: Communication with Building Principal regarding the instructional needs of staff Deep understanding of elementary curriculum Development and implementation of ESOL strategies Participation in long range planning and capacity of the ESOL department Collaborate with teachers and provide instructional support in classrooms Collaborate with building and district instructional coaches Lead, meet, and communicate with building ESOL staff to support all instruction Provides direct support through - Trainings related to embedding ESOL strategies into various content areas Connection to resources (research, people, places, services, specific departments, etc.) Modeling or team teaching lessons (with teacher and support teacher) Supporting all areas of curriculum Qualification Profile: Must have current Kansas Teaching License ESOL endorsement required 3 to 5 years of classroom teaching experience preferred FLSA Status: Exempt
