JOB SUMMARY
Have you ever considered teaching in an exciting inclusive aircraft engineering training environment? Are you a qualified Aircraft Mechanical Engineer or an experienced engineer who can transfer your skills delivering Aeronautical Engineering training to the next future generations of RAF engineers? Do you have the desire and ability to learn new trade knowledge within the aircraft mechanical discipline?
The No 1 School of Technical Training, Mechanical Training Squadron (MTS) trainers are a ‘whole-force’ mix of Armed Services and Civil Service Instructors, who deliver world-class technical training to a broad audience of students across a varied mechanical curriculum. Specialist Instructional Officers (SIO’s) develop and deliver mechanical technical training to Phase 2 (Initial Technical) and Phase 3 (pre-employment/career) students who are either beginning their service careers or undertaking training for specific roles they are due to be assigned into.
SIO roles are incredibly interesting and rewarding opportunities for dedicated and focused civil servants to shape and nurture the next generation of Service Mechanical Specialists and enhance the skill sets of personnel returning to MTS for additional training.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
JOB DESCRIPTION
A very exciting opportunity has arisen to join No 1 School of Technical Training, MTS. This recruitment campaign has 5 SIO positions available for individuals who have the desire to be training specialists, with an ability to compliment the very high delivery competencies within the MTS. You will be involved in developing RAF Aircraft Mechanical Apprentices by conducting training programs that will boost employee’s workplace performance and confidence, in alliance with Service core values. You will be responsible for performing training needs assessments, creating and delivering a theoretical and practical curriculum in an exciting and well supported training environment.
The ideal candidates should be great communicators with the ability to effectively describe complicated ideas to different audiences. You must be well organised, proficient in time management, and be confident in public speaking skills. You’ll be required to be both strategic and reactive, assessing the skills and knowledge within the group and determining what training is needed to grow and nurture these individuals.
The working environment is a mixture of Classroom and Practical based training delivery, which takes place within the delivery areas premises and using modern learning methods. The practical training is carried out using Ground training aids such as the Jaguar, Hawk and Tornado aircraft and aircraft system simulators.
Please be aware successful candidates for the SIO positions are required obtain Disclosure & Barring Service clearance.
Basic check will be conducted on a successful candidate to ensure appropriate level of security clearance for operating at RAF Cosford Training Squadrons.
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential: Level 3 General Engineering. (with skills transferrable to AE mechanical).

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.
External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
