Job Description Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic, forward-thinking Specialist grade Oral Surgeon to join our well-established Consultant led Oral Surgery team. We seek a colleague with experience of providing oral surgery, facial pain and oral medicine assessments and treatments under local anaesthesia. Access to Consultant delivered general anaesthetic operating lists including paediatric dentoalveolar surgery, patients with additional care needs, pre-radiotherapy oncology patients in addition to general adult oral surgery allows for a comprehensive range of oral surgery procedures and patient groups. There will be opportunities for supervision and teaching of resident staff. An interest in the management of osteonecrosis would be advantageous. We seek a colleague who can demonstrate their ability to work as part of our efficient and cohesive multidisciplinary team, and interact well with consultant colleagues, local GPs and dentists. The MFU has a team of specialists providing oral surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, and restorative dentistry as part of dental and surgical MDT care. We have a fully equipped MFU laboratory with highly skilled specialist technicians. Clinical support staff including nursing, technical and administration staff numbers are in place to support this post. Qualifications Qualifications Full GDC registration. Entry on the GDC Specialist Register in Oral Surgery or within 6 months of obtaining CCST (or equivalent) in Oral Surgery. Desirable Certificate in Medical Education (or equivalent). Leadership programme experience. Clinical Experience Broad clinical training in the speciality of Oral Surgery. Experience of MDT management of complex paediatric dentoalveolar surgery. Experience in the assessment and management of osteonecrosis. Clinical Skills Demonstrable skills and experience in Oral Surgery. Understanding of clinical risk management. Experience in assessment of patients referred by other hospital specialities as part of shared care. Knowledge Able to demonstrate appropriate level of clinical knowledge. Knowledge and use of evidence-based practice. IT skills. Effective, confident presentation ability. Experience in and outside the speciality. Other Evidence of participation in audit relevant to the role. Good oral and written communication skills. Experience of clinical supervision of OS Registrars and Dental Core Trainees. Teaching. Publications. Prizes and honours. Logical thinking, problem solving and decision making. Additional Information The appointee will be expected to participate in all facets of oral surgery activity within the department, including oral medicine, facial pain assessments and operating under LA. The post will be based at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Maxillofacial Department with a possible visiting role to St, Mary’s Hospital in the Isle of Wight. Full participation in teaching, audit and research will be expected.
