Job Description: The Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) Student Services Specialist is a full-time, Professional/Managerial position that performs a broad range of prospective postsecondary student advisement duties in support of the EOC grant and related services. The individual holding this position will provide direct pre-college advisement to EOC clients, including admissions, financial aid, academic and career guidance. This individual has considerable latitude for exercising judgment and discretion in performing those duties. The position reports to the Director of the Educational Opportunity Center. This is a grant-funded position. Duties and Responsibilities: Informs prospective students on college degree options, career and academic choices, admissions and graduation requirements, college policies and procedures, and financial aid opportunities. Responsible for recruitment of participants, academic advising, class schedule planning, and information on registration processes. Assists in distributing support services to include tuition, child care, and transportation. Assists transfer students with advisement process including curriculum guides, graduation requirements, and other general information. Assists students with class scheduling according to testing requirements, and develops or reviews education plans to ensure students’ schedules are in line with their goals or transfer needs. Assists with activities in public/private high schools and community. Develops workshops and other appropriate presentations to disseminate information relevant to prospective students. Refers students requiring counseling services to a counselor appropriate to the student’s need. Acts as a referral agent for students who may need services of another department/program, business, or community service. Monitors academic progress of advisees and provides assistance to students as needed. Acts as liaison between faculty and students to enhance advising process. Completes all documentation and reports as required. Counsels and informs prospective students about financial aid opportunities and requirements. Demonstrates, teaches, and completes federal financial aid application forms. Provides information about various college and technical programs and assists prospective students with the admissions process to those schools and programs. Conducts community education regarding the value of postsecondary education and specifically encourages those from low income backgrounds to participate in higher education. Responsible for knowing and conforming to all safety practices and regulations that apply to this specific area and position. Unsafe conditions should be reported to the immediate supervisor and to the Pensacola State College Police Department/Public Safety. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree in education, social work, or related field is required. Two years of experience in career counseling, recruitment services, academic advising, student services to individuals, or public school teaching is required. Successful results of a background check are required. Pursuant to College policy, it is an employment eligibility requirement for an applicant to meet the requirements of § 435.04(2), Florida Statutes, related to background investigations. Any person failing to meet the requirements of the statute will be deemed not qualified to hold employment in this position. A Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) approved background check will be conducted on every successful candidate as a condition of employment, and any person who fails to disclose any adverse information contained in the background investigation at the time of submitting the employment application will be disqualified from employment.
