What you’ll do

The Tax Specialist adheres to all legislative tax compliance and financial reporting requirements and strives to identify opportunities to minimize the amount of taxes payable while remaining compliant with accounting principles and the legislated statutes.

  • Preparation of annual corporate income tax returns, monthly income tax provisions and monthly HST returns
  • Preparation of all working papers to support tax filings
  • Support income and commodity tax audits and work directly with the government auditor
  • Ensure compliance with tax legislation regarding payments to foreign vendors, including the calculation and issue of Non-Resident tax slips (T4ANR, NR4) and informational return filings
  • Monitor tax legislation and Ontario Energy Board initiatives relating to tax
  • Preparation and analysis of regulatory tax filings
  • Provide support and tax analysis for financial statement and management reporting
  • Preparation of tax budget and forecasts to support the annual Financial Plan
  • Preparation of property tax payments, accruals and analysis
  • Perform research pertaining to tax planning, issues, and legislative developments
  • Provide tax support in the planning, design and implementation of projects and new strategic initiatives
  • Ensure compliance to legislative, regulatory and Health & Safety policies, procedures and standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Who you are

Education & Specialized Knowledge

  • Post-secondary education in Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting
  • Fully designated Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) in Canada
  • CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Course
  • In-depth commodity tax course / training strongly preferred
  • In-depth knowledge of the Income Tax Act and tax accounting
  • Knowledge of the energy and utility industries, including a solid understanding of the regulatory environment
  • Knowledge of Regulatory accounting and IFRS
  • Proficiency in Tax software and Tier I ERP systems
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, with advanced knowledge in Excel

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years in corporate taxation (income, commodity)
  • Strong foundation in financial and management tax accounting and/or reporting
  • Experience in a unionized utility environment an asset

  • Highly self-motivated and directed
  • Solid problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to provide practical and/or innovative solutions to complex technical issues
  • Excellent written and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical information in an organized and concise way
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines
  • Ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Must hold and maintain a valid class “G” driver’s license
