Specimen Processor – Join the UPMC Harrisburg Laboratory Team UPMC Harrisburg is seeking a Full-Time Specimen Processor to join our laboratory team! This position works evening shifts from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., including every third Saturday. In this important role, you’ll receive, sort, and process specimens for all laboratory sections, ensuring accuracy and efficiency at every step. You’ll enter requisition data and patient results into the computer system, handle phone inquiries, report critical results, and assist with clerical tasks such as coding charge slips. Responsibilities: Provide courteous, professional, and positive service in all work interactions. Assist in department workflow and demonstrate initiative to support team tasks. Monitor pneumatic tube and courier deliveries to ensure timely specimen processing. Investigate and resolve specimen issues, complete quality forms for errors or unacceptable samples. Centrifuge, label, aliquot, and store specimens according to policy and proper temperature. Enter specimen receive times, verify patient information, and ensure accurate matching with requisitions. Answer phone inquiries regarding specimen collection, results, and normal ranges. Prepare, package, and send specimens to outside locations as required. Receive, sort, prioritize, and share specimens; notify supervisor of issues or corrections needed. Maintain a clean and safe work area, follow biohazard and safety protocols, and assist with training new staff. High School diploma or equivalent. Three to six months of experience in a clinical laboratory, physician's office, or other medical environment preferred, including knowledge of or experience in Medical Terminology and Laboratory Information systems. Three to six months of experience in a service environment including call center, customer service center, or product distribution/fulfillment center preferred. Good oral and written communication skills required. Ability to communicate effectively with all age groups and populations of external and internal customers (as well as co-workers) both by telephone and in person.
