Description

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL AS AN AAC COORDINATOR AT ACTIVATE LEARNING?

This role could be an excellent fit for an experienced AAC professional, whether you’ve come from an educational background or related sector such as communication support work or speech and language therapy.
Experience working with individuals who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is essential. You will need to build an understanding of how the student uses AAC to communicate. The ideal candidate has a person-centred and adaptable approach. You will have experience of working with people with complex learning difficulties and / or disabilities, including experience of providing personal care.
Patience, diligence, strong teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills are crucial, as the role involves close collaboration with the student, their family, support staff, teachers, therapists, and others. You will be expected to support the student to manage their time in college outside of their timetabled lessons, including breaks and lunch times, and enrichment activities. It is expected you will support on any work placement as the student makes progress in college towards their chosen next stage.
This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful impact on a student’s educational journey, ensuring they can access learning in a way that maximizes their potential and independence.

Responsibilities

Activate Learning are seeking a dedicated and compassionate professional to work with a student who uses Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) in a college setting. This role requires a person-centred and flexible approach to ensure the student can fully engage with teaching, learning, and assessments in a format that meets their specific needs in the least effortful way for the student.
The primary function of the role will be helping them negotiate their path through the curriculum in college, including classroom support, ensuring other staff are aware of their requirements and appropriately trained, that resources are created or adapting to be suitable, and assessing their progress against targets you’ve set in consideration of their needs.
To fulfil these responsibilities you’ll be required to liaise with various different internal teams between learning support, exams and faculty staff. You will also need to work closely with the student’s family and external providers to ensure information is effectively communicated, and that all the learner’s needs are being met.
This is a full-time, term-time role contracted until July 2025, though an extension until July 2026 is likely to support this or other learners across our Oxfordshire colleges. As part of the role you will be liaising with employers offering work placements, so there may be the potential to progress to support the learner in the workplace when they leave education.
