Description This position oversees sports programming at the Visser Family and Spartan Nash YMCA and will involve evening and weekend responsibilities, based on program needs. POSITION SUMMARY: The Sports Director provides operational leadership for all sports and family programming within the SpartanNash and Visser Family branches of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids. This role is responsible for the development, implementation, growth, and evaluation of high-quality, mission-driven programs that meet community needs and achieve participation and revenue goals. The Sports Director oversees daily program operations, ensures safety and compliance standards, manages budgets, and drives continuous improvement within their specialized program area. They recruit, train, and supervise staff and volunteers, fostering a culture the models the YMCA Core Values. This position works closely with coaches, officials, players, parents/guardians, sponsors, and community partners to deliver an exceptional participant experience and strengthen community engagement. The Sports Director serves as a visible, hands-on leader during programs and events, including evenings and weekends, to ensure consistent quality and positive public representation of the YMCA. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Program and Community Development Develops and implements sports/arts & humanities programs, activities, leagues and clinics Manages the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the sports programs (youth & adult leagues, classes) Schedules and manages the off-site facilities for programs Manages, develops, and monitors program growth Prepares and maintains accurate program and statistical records required by the Association, other agencies, or donors Administers all preschool and youth sports on-site and off-site programs Prepares informational packets for participants, volunteers, team captains, and coaches Develops school break activities for area youth Develops and maintains relationships and visibility within the community Assists in collecting and depositing entry fees Audits equipment supplies for programs Develops action steps to improve programs Promotes the YMCA to the community through groups and corporations Participates as Manager on Duty each week and weekend rotation Works with community to develop sports activities Recruits sponsors for Youth Sports programs Human Resource Management Manages Sports staff and volunteers Manages the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this department Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Association’s policies and applicable laws Assists staff in identifying and meeting all development needs with action plans built into the next fiscal year budget Sets goals and objectives for each staff member Makes annual salary increment recommendations Audits payroll reports Fills staff vacancies in accordance with established Association policies Supports the Association in recruitment of diverse staff and volunteers Interviews, hires, and trains staff; plans, assigns, and directs work; rewards and disciplines staff; addresses complaints and resolves problems Fiscal Management Meets all budget goals Monitors monthly budget and year-end forecast for all program areas Prepares program cost studies for activities Assists with Annual Campaign fundraising efforts Volunteer Development Recruits and trains a diverse group of volunteers Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids Association COMPENSATION $43,000 - $53,000 ; Salary, Exempt BENEFITS Free YMCA Family Membership – Enjoy full access to facilities & program discounts for you and your family! 20% Childcare Discount – Discount is off the regular rate for each child enrolled in a YMCA childcare program, excluding the infant room. Requirements QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree (BA, BS) from four-year college or university; one to three years related experience; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience required. Past supervision experience preferred. Knowledge of program elements (organization, promotion, establishing curriculum, and safety) and the ability to implement them. Ability to interact with people of all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles. Working knowledge of computers and experience with a variety of software applications. YMCA experience preferred.
