About Us Evergreen Fire/Rescue, founded in 1948, provides around the clock emergency medical, rescue, and fire suppression services along with community risk reduction services to nearly 26,000 residents across more than 120 square miles. Led by a Fire Chief and the Board of Directors of the Evergreen Fire Protection District, EFR consists of six divisions: Administration, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Fire Operations, Community Risk Reduction, Maintenance, and Wildland. The volunteers and employees of each division are committed to providing exceptional service to their community of residents, business owners, employees, and visitors. About the Position The Wildland Squad Boss provides leadership, coordination, and supervision for assigned Fuels Crew members while actively participating in wildfire mitigation, suppression, and preparedness operations. This role combines leadership responsibilities with hands-on project work to reduce wildfire risk through fuels reduction, defensible space creation, prescribed fire, and wildfire response. The position typically works a 40-hour week, with additional hours as needed for projects, training, or emergency response. Core Responsibilities Include: Duties may vary depending on district needs and direction from the Wildland Chief or Wildland Captain or Wildland Lieutenants. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Assist Wildland Captain and Lieutenants in leading, training, and supervising Fuels Crew members during mitigation projects, chipping, pile construction/burning, and prescribed fire operations. Assist and manage crew in participating in home assessments, chipping program operations, and large-scale fuels mitigation projects throughout the district. Operate and oversee the safe use of heavy equipment, chainsaws, chippers, engines, pumps, and hand tools. Respond to emergency incidents including wildland fire calls and serve in leadership roles during initial attack, extended attack, mop-up, and patrol operations. Participate in national wildfire assignments annually as part of an engine crew. Assist with agency training coordination and weekly communication regarding wildfire preparedness. Support fuels moisture data collection, record keeping, and project documentation. Maintain equipment, vehicles, and tools in safe, working condition. Ensure accurate reporting of crew hours, work completed, and site observations. Represent Evergreen Fire/Rescue professionally when interacting with the public, landowners, and partner organizations. Perform other job-related duties as assigned. High School Diploma or GED. Valid Driver’s License with no major violations. One or more years of leadership experience. Wildland firefighting experience, including both initial attack and extended national assignments. Fuels mitigation experience. NWCG Firefighter Type 1 or active FFT1 Position Task Book. Faller 3 (FAL3) Current arduous pack test Preferred Qualifications: ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 (or within 30 days of employment). NWCG Qualifications: Faller 2 (FAL2), Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5). Completion of the following classes: S-130, S-190, L-180, S-211, S-212, S-215, S-219, S-290, L-280. Experience with chainsaws, chippers, mitigation projects, pile construction/burning, and initial attack and mop-up operations.
