About the Team The Database DevOps team is responsible for building and operating Workday’s next-generation Database Platform (XDB) and Database Operator (db-operator) capabilities across Workday’s public cloud environments (AWS and GCP). Database Operator (db-operator) is a Kubernetes controller that automates the full lifecycle management of databases (AWS Aurora RDS and GCP Cloud SQL) using declarative Kubernetes objects. We own the automation, tooling, and orchestration that power Workday’s mission-critical databases, ensuring they are secure, resilient, scalable, cost-efficient, and fully integrated into Workday’s CI/CD and cloud infrastructure. Our team sits at the intersection of Kubernetes, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and database engineering. We deliver the platform foundations that thousands of Workday engineers rely on to safely deploy and operate database workloads at scale. About the Role As a member of Workday’s Database DevOps team, you will: Own and evolve the db-operator, the Kubernetes operator that powers automated creation, lifecycle management, and high-availability of database instances across multi-cloud environments. Contribute to the design and implementation of XDB Platform, Workday’s unified, multi-cloud DB platform for AWS, GCP, and private cloud. Engineer CI/CD pipelines, GitOps workflows, and developer tooling that enable fast, safe, repeatable delivery of DB platform capabilities. Ensure platform resilience and operational readiness for all database-as-a-service components. Develop and improve monitoring, alerting, operational dashboards, and data-driven insights on database fleets. You will solve engineering challenges in distributed systems, automation at scale, multi-cloud Kubernetes, and DB lifecycle orchestration, enabling Workday to run thousands of databases reliably across regions. About You You are an engineer passionate about distributed systems, Kubernetes, automation, and cloud-native database operations. You thrive at the intersection of infrastructure + software engineering and enjoy building robust abstractions and APIs that empower developers. You take pride in: Designing resilient, multi-cloud distributed systems. Building automation that eliminates toil. Ensuring security, HA, and disaster-recovery for critical platform services. Using strong engineering fundamentals to build reliable, tested, observable systems. Balancing feature delivery with operational excellence and long-term platform health. You are comfortable contributing across the stack - Go, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Terraform, cloud APIs, and platform engineering. Basic Qualifications 2–5 years of experience in a Cloud Engineer or DevOps role Hands-on development experience in Go, Python, or a similar systems language. Strong experience with Kubernetes, Operators (Kubebuilder, controller-runtime), or distributed systems. Solid understanding of Linux fundamentals. Other Qualifications Experience building or operating highly available, scalable, multi-tenanted platform services in AWS, GCP, or private cloud. Strong understanding of Kubernetes internals (CRDs, controllers, RBAC, networking, scheduling). Experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, Argo Workflows, Jenkins). Hands-on experience with IaC tools such as Terraform. Familiarity with cloud database operations, or DB lifecycle automation. Experience with monitoring/observability (Prometheus, Grafana, Pharos). Strong debugging, analytical reasoning, and system-level thinking. Experience in Agile/Scrum environments; comfort collaborating across global teams. Our Approach to Flexible Work With Flex Work, we’re combining the best of both worlds: in-person time and remote. Our approach enables our teams to deepen connections, maintain a strong community, and do their best work. We know that flexibility can take shape in many ways, so rather than a number of required days in-office each week, we simply spend at least half (50%) of our time each quarter in the office or in the field with our customers, prospects, and partners (depending on role). This means you'll have the freedom to create a flexible schedule that caters to your business, team, and personal needs, while being intentional to make the most of time spent together. Those in our remote "home office" roles also have the opportunity to come together in our offices for important moments that matter. At Workday, we are committed to providing an accessible and inclusive hiring experience where all candidates can fully demonstrate their skills. If you require assistance or an accommodation at any point, please email accommodations@workday.com. Are you being referred to one of our roles? If so, ask your connection at Workday about our Employee Referral process! At Workday, we value our candidates’ privacy and data security. Workday will never ask candidates to apply to jobs through websites that are not Workday Careers. Please be aware of sites that may ask for you to input your data in connection with a job posting that appears to be from Workday but is not. In addition, Workday will never ask candidates to pay a recruiting fee, or pay for consulting or coaching services, in order to apply for a job at Workday. 🌟 Join Our Talent Community here!
