The Attalon Optical Systems business unit is a precision optics and optical assemblies design and manufacturing group, which specializes in high-precision aspheres for a variety of specialized applications including semiconductor and flat-panel display manufacturing, ground and space-based telescopes, defense systems and other exotic scientific and government-sponsored programs. The business encompasses the Tinsley Custom Optics product line, and is in Richmond, CA. Responsibilities The role involves interpreting and evaluating optical component drawings to determine the most effective processes and methods needed to meet precise drawing specifications. This includes programming CNC tool paths for machining glass and other optical materials, as well as operating advanced Haas and DMG-Mori 3 to 5-axis vertical and horizontal machining centers to shape these materials with high accuracy. Additionally, conventional optical machining equipment is used to shape optical materials. The position also includes coaching and training junior CNC technicians in glass machining techniques, optical fabrication methods, and CNC programming using GibbsCAM. Moreover, the individual actively participates in process development initiatives aimed at expanding machining capabilities, increasing production yield, and improving cycle times Preferred Qualifications • 5–7 years of experience in precision CNC machining of glass • Proficient in CAM software (Mastercam, GibbsCAM, or equivalent) • Strong understanding of GD&T and ability to interpret technical drawings accurately • Experienced in training and coaching junior CNC technicians on programming and machining complex glass geometries • Skilled in classical optical generating techniques: blancharding, spherical generating, edging, and cropping • Familiar with aspheric optical surfaces, including sag calculations, aspheric departure, wedge, and decentering For California, the hourly base pay range for this role is $22.19-$37.96 Please note this range is provided as a general guideline.
