Description
Sr. Electrical Engineer – Low & Medium Voltage Power Systems Company: Miller Industries Location: Raleigh, NC Job Type: Full-Time About Miller Industries MILLC delivers engineered solutions, system integrations, and industrial services for complex commercial, institutional, and manufacturing facilities. Our team designs and supports the electrical infrastructure that powers central utilities, critical equipment, and advanced mechanical systems. We are seeking an Electrical Engineer with strong competencies in low‑ and medium‑voltage power systems, NEMA equipment, and electrical safety codes. ---------------------------------------- Position Summary The Electrical Engineer will design, evaluate, and support the implementation of electrical distribution systems ranging from 120V low-voltage circuits to 37kV class medium-voltage equipment. The ideal candidate will have experience with switchgear, MCCs, transformers, VFDs, and protective devices, along with deep familiarity with NFPA 70, 70B, 70E, UL standards, and modern electrical analysis tools. This role involves collaboration with mechanical engineers, controls specialists, fabrication teams, and field technicians to ensure reliable, code-compliant, and safe electrical system designs. ---------------------------------------- Key Responsibilities Electrical System Design & Analysis * Design and specify low‑ and medium‑voltage power distribution systems, grounding systems, and protective devices. * Develop single-line diagrams, load calculations, panel schedules, and equipment layouts. * Select and specify NEMA-rated electrical equipment including switchgear, MCCs, panelboards, and control enclosures. * Apply engineering principles for integrating VFDs, soft starters, motors, and power electronics into mechanical and utility systems. * Perform system studies including short circuit, arc flash, load flow, coordination, and grounding simulations (preferred: ETAP/SKM). Codes, Standards & Compliance * Ensure designs comply with NFPA 70 (NEC), 70B (maintenance), 70E (arc flash & electrical safety). * Apply appropriate UL standards when specifying assemblies, components, and control panels. * Develop electrical documentation supporting AHJ submissions, safety plans, and commissioning reports. Field Support & Project Execution * Support installation teams with technical guidance, troubleshooting, and commissioning of electrical systems. * Review vendor drawings, control wiring diagrams, and fabrication details for accuracy and constructability. * Assist in developing testing procedures, energization plans, and verification checklists. * Participate in site evaluations to validate existing conditions and power system capabilities. Cross‑Functional Collaboration * Work closely with engineering, fabrication, and project management teams to ensure seamless integration of electrical and mechanical systems. * Coordinate with structural and mechanical teams on equipment mounting, cable routing, and conduit support requirements. * Communicate design intent and technical recommendations to clients and internal stakeholders. ---------------------------------------- Required Qualifications * Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field. * Strong understanding of low‑ and medium‑voltage power systems and industrial electrical design. * Experience with NEMA electrical equipment, VFDs, motors, MCCs, and switchgear. * Knowledge of NFPA 70, 70B, 70E, and relevant UL standards. * Ability to read and create schematics, wiring diagrams, and single-line diagrams. * Solid analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. ---------------------------------------- Preferred Qualifications * Experience using ETAP or SKM PowerTools for electrical system modeling and arc flash studies. * EIT or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. * Familiarity with industrial facilities, central utility plants, or large mechanical/electrical systems. * Experience with PLCs, controls, automation, or motor protection relays.
Responsibilities
The engineer will design, evaluate, and support the implementation of electrical distribution systems ranging from low-voltage circuits up to 37kV class medium-voltage equipment, ensuring compliance with safety codes and standards. Key tasks include developing detailed electrical documentation, performing system studies, and collaborating cross-functionally with mechanical and fabrication teams for seamless system integration.
