Description Position Summary The Sr. Firewall Engineer will design, manage and troubleshoot the multi-tier firewall security infrastructure systems. Despite the strong technical focus of the job, firewall engineers also engage with customers and government leadership, relaying information about projects and troubleshooting all issues discovered. They are proficient in change management and disaster response, and they actively apply policies and standards to all projects. While they spend most of their time in front of a computer, they often function within a team of other engineers, and they may work shifts at irregular hours to perform maintenance at unobtrusive times or resolve critical issues. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: Configure, manage and troubleshoot firewall and security platforms (Cisco ASA, Juniper SRX, Palo Alto, F5 and Sidewinder) Analyze firewall change requests and integrate changes into existing firewall policies, while maintaining security standards. Develop and maintain security documentation and standards documents, as required. Provide higher tier technical support to the operation teams on all security related networking issues Participate in design discussions with planning and design teams of different engineer groups to design new secured network segments and security policies. Work closely with various project managers in defining, tracking and reporting tasks and milestones Design Security Systems: Firewall engineers review customer requirements for security systems and collaborate with other engineers and developers to decide on an overall technical approach. Once they reach agreement with the customer, they proceed with creating specific designs. Troubleshoot Issues: Firewall engineers constantly monitor security devices and applications for performance problems, as well address tickets in queue, and provide troubleshooting support for customers. When issues arise, they must analyze the root cause and resolve them promptly or else escalate them to another department while updating customers all throughout. Write Documentation: Aside from preparing status reports for customers, firewall engineers write extensive documentation on procedures, device statuses, firewall block lists, and other important technical areas. They also create diagrams of network topologies and record details of troubleshooting processes. Ensure Compliance: Standards and policies are extremely important when it comes to network security, and firewall engineers should be aware of these, keeping abreast of changes and defining processes for compliance. In addition, they enforce quality control and ensure that all output meets project requirements. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities) BS degree; additional years of experience may be considered in lieu of degree 5+ years of experience with Network protection techniques and technologies Experience with Firewalls, Routers, Linux, VPN, F5 and IDS/IPS CompTIA Security+ Juniper/Cisco/Palo Alto experience Top Secret/SCI clearance Experience in Network security hardware (Cisco ASA (Firepower), CSM, Prime, Juniper SRX, JunoSpace, Palo Alto, Panorama, F5, Firemon, NetScreen), Network analysis software (Linux, TCPDUMP, PCAP), Diagram software (Visio, PDF, CAD), Customer service software (Remedy) Problem-solving skills Customer service Attention to detail Time management Physical Demands and Work Environment The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
