JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Senior Manager, Data Steward leads a specialized team of data professionals varying in size and complexity that are responsible for providing day to day strategic direction of data governance activities. The role manages the overall data governance team or function(s) for a key business which may include Data Governance and /or Data Management roles and activities. The role also ensures an integrated approach with other business governance and control areas, the broader organization, and enterprise control functions. Appointed as a Data Steward for their business, providing oversight and challenge for data-related activities, primarily interfacing with executive and/or functional stakeholders, including LOB First Line of Defense roles and other control partners. May play a key role in developing the business’ data strategy
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Undergraduate degree or technical certificate and /or
- 10+ years relevant experience
- Advanced knowledge of data governance/data management practices, enterprise data policy, standards &strategy
- Advanced knowledge of M&A due diligence process, business data strategy, data risk management, and data life cycle management
- Knowledge of current and emerging competitor and market trends
- Skill in managing budgets and resource allocation
- Skill in mentoring, coaching and performance management
- Skill in using analytical software tools, data analysis methods and reporting techniques
- Skill in using computer applications including MS Office
- Advanced ability to lead, plan, implement and evaluate program/project activities to ensure completion of initiatives
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
- Ability to work collaboratively and build relationships across teams and functions
- Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently
- Ability to exercise sound judgement in making decisions
- Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines
- Ability handle confidential information with discretion

- Leadership experience
- Experience with Data governance surrounding projects & data issues, governance control, and risk
- Familiarity with KPI’s and metrics

CUSTOMER ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Ensures an integrated and aggregated view of all related activities across the overall function providing escalations, recommendations, and decision support to leadership
- Forecasts programs / initiatives and demand, and coordinate prioritization of the portfolio / initiatives with key stakeholders
- Oversees / leads / manages and plans a work activity that may require alignment across multiple areas
- Leads the team in the development and/or integrated implementation of policies / processes / procedures / projects /changes across multiple functional areas
- Leads respective team for area of specialization with industry, external and internal, enterprise and business awareness; recognizing and anticipating emerging trends and; identifying issues and opportunities and recommending action to senior management
- Acts as a strategic partner by leading relationships with key enterprise partners and interfacing with respective leadership team to effectively manage own data governance / management area and clarify scope of accountabilities while influencing and aligning others as needed
- Develops, communicates and implements a holistic strategy for own specific data governance function in support of and integrated with the overall business strategy
- Establishes the LOB framework and guidance for identification of critical data and critical data elements
- Leads the governance and oversight of LOB data management activities, including metadata, data quality, data retention and disposition tasks
- Establishes a consistent approach to data issue management across the LOB, providing oversight to ensure data issues are prioritized appropriately and resolve in a timely manner.
- Conducts day to day data governance and / or data management activities for their respective business or function
- Contributes to the strategic direction of the data governance / management function and play a key role in the development and implementation of strategies in support of the overall data strategy
- Leads / supports the business’ Segment Data Council
- Provides direction and/or input to complex, wide ranging enterprise or cross-function / business projects / initiatives as a data governance expert, supporting the inclusion of data driven considerations in all projects impacting the business or functional group
- Plans, leads / manages and/or oversees a diverse set of work activities requiring alignment across multiple areas, including projects policies / processes / procedures / changes in across multiple functional areas
- Leads partner to management / leadership and respective teams for area of specialization with industry, external and internal, enterprise and business awareness; recognizing and anticipating emerging trends and; identifying issues and opportunities and recommending action to senior management
- Works effectively with multiple teams across a broad spectrum of initiatives and functional domains, influencing and aligning others as needed
- Provides functional / business level communications to ensure messages to stakeholders and / or employees are consistent, appropriate and aligned to business risk strategies and executive management direction
- Facilitates key discussions and provides thought leadership to executive audience on existing and emerging data related activities
- Forecasts programs / initiatives and demand, for own business
- Supports the identification of business data owners and business data SMEs for the LOB and ensure LOB adherence to enterprise data policies and standards
- Plans / leads / manages and/or oversees set of work activities for the purposes of socialization and training of the LOB data governance and data management community on data policies, procedures, tools, and templates
- Partners with the business to proactively prepare for internal / regulatory data-related requests
- Develops processes to create timely, complete and accurate reporting to inform on areas of increasing data risk
SHAREHOLDER ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Stewards data in accordance with the Enterprise Data Policy, Standards and Strategy
- Ensures team adheres to enterprise frameworks and methodologies related to overall business data activities
- Responsible for the stewardship of data in accordance with the Enterprise Data Policy, Standards and Strategy and to ensure that teams adheres to the policy
- Leads relationships with corporate and/or control functions to ensure alignment with enterprise and/or regulatory requirements
- Supports team in staying knowledgeable on emerging issues, trends and evolving regulatory requirements and assess potential impacts to the Bank
- Assesses / identifies key issues and escalate to appropriate levels and relevant stakeholders and business management where required
- Identifies, mitigates and reports on risk issues per enterprise policy / guidance and ensure appropriate escalation processes are followed
- Ensures business operations are in compliance with applicable internal and external requirements (e.g. financial controls, segregation of duties, transaction approvals and physical control of assets)
- Leads relationships with business lines / corporate and/or control functions to ensure alignment with enterprise and/or regulatory requirements
- Leads or contributes to cross-functional / enterprise initiatives as an organizational or subject matter expert helping to identify risk / provide guidance for complex situations
- Protects the interests of the organization – identify and manage risks, and escalate non-standard, high risk transactions / activities as necessary
- Manages oversight process, risk-based identification and monitoring of related risks and regulatory compliance across the supported functions, while ensuring key controls and processes are effectively managed
- Oversees or leads the facilitation and/or implementation of action / remediation plans to address performance / risk / governance issues
- Keeps abreast of emerging issues, trends, and evolving regulatory requirements and assess potential impacts
- Maintains a culture of risk management and control, supported by effective processes in alignment with risk appetite
- Contributes/participates in financial / resource planning process for their LOB
