Sr Manager, Utility Operations

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Doctorate degree and 2 years of utility operations, engineering, or facilities management experience
Or
Master’s degree and 6 years of utility operations, engineering, or facilities management experience
Or
Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of utility operations, engineering, or facilities management experience
Or
Associate’s degree and 10 years of utility operations, engineering, or facilities management experience
Or
High school diploma / GED and 12 years of utility operations, engineering, or facilities management experience
In addition to meeting at least one of the above requirements, you must have a minimum of 2 years experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs, or directing the allocation or resources. Your managerial experience may run concurrently with the required technical experience referenced above

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related discipline; advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in utility operations, engineering, or facilities management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Demonstrated expertise in electrical systems, critical utilities, and HVAC operation and maintenance.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of environmental, health, and safety regulations relevant to utility operations.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills, including experience managing multi-shift teams.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure, particularly in emergency situations.

Responsibilities

In this vital role you will be responsible for the overall leadership and management of site utility systems, ensuring their safe, compliant, and efficient operation at all times. This highly accountable role covers electrical, HVAC, and critical utilities, providing 24/7 oversight across four shifts. The Sr Manager leads a team of front-line managers and is the principal owner of utility operations, driving continuous improvement in reliability, safety, and regulatory adherence. This role is critical to the functioning and safety of the organization. The Senior Manager, Utility Operations, is expected to lead with integrity, technical excellence, and an unwavering commitment to operational excellence.

  • Operational Leadership: Direct and oversee the operation of all utility systems, including but not limited to electrical distribution, HVAC, steam, water, compressed air, and critical utilities (Purified Water, Water for Injection and Clean Steam).
  • 24/7 Accountability: Maintain round-the-clock ownership of utility operations, providing guidance and decision-making across all four shifts to ensure seamless and uninterrupted service.
  • Team Management: Lead, mentor, and develop front-line managers and their teams. Set clear expectations, provide coaching, and manage performance to meet organizational goals.
  • Safety & Compliance: Ensure that all utility operations follow relevant safety standards, environmental regulations, and internal policies. Foster a culture of safety and maintain rigorous compliance documentation.
  • Efficiency & Reliability: Identify and implement strategies to optimize system performance, reduce downtime, and improve energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive process improvements through data analysis, protocols, and technological innovation. Lead root cause analysis for utility failures and develop corrective actions.
  • Budget & Resource Management: Oversee utility operations budgets, manage contracts and vendors, and allocate resources effectively to meet operational and strategic objectives.
  • Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external customers regarding utility operations. Provide regular updates to senior leadership on performance, incidents, and improvement plans.
  • Emergency Response: Lead utility response efforts in the event of an incident, coordinating cross-functional teams to ensure rapid and effective resolution.
  • Site-based role with frequent presence in operational and utility areas.
  • Requires availability for after-hours support and incident response.
