About the role: Reporting to the R&D Electrical Manager, the Senior R&D Mechanical Designer will drive the innovation and new product development within our distribution and medium power transformer portfolio. This position focuses on advanced mechanical design, simulation and development of transformers and components, supporting research initiatives, prototype development, design validation, product optimization & mechanical standardization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical design and development of innovative, next-generation liquid immersed single-phase and three-phase transformers for research, prototyping and new product introduction, while compliance with industry standards (e.g., IEEE, CSA).
  • Create mechanical solutions for R&D projects from initial concept to prototype, meeting defined performance, safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform advanced mechanical simulations using FEA and related tools including structural, thermal, seismic, pressure/vacuum and internal arc fault simulations to validate and optimize designs.
  • Optimize designs for cost-effectiveness, material utilization, manufacturability and performance by leveraging emerging materials, technologies and industry best practices.
  • Develop and standardize mechanical components, assemblies and design practices to streamline development and enhance mechanical efficiency across products.
  • Prepare comprehensive engineering documentation for R&D developed mechanical designs, including CAD drawings, BOM and technical reports.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including electrical engineering, manufacturing, quality and supply chain to ensure smooth integration of new designs into production.
  • Provide technical support during prototype manufacturing and testing, resolving mechanical design-related issues in a timely manner.
  • Participate in industry standards development activities and contribute to IP creation and patent strategies.
  • Stay abreast of technological advancements, incorporating new materials, methods, and simulation techniques to improve product reliability and performance.

QUALIFICATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional Engineering designation in Ontario (“P.Eng.”) is preferred.
  • 5-10 years of experience in transformer mechanical design or related engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in mechanical CAD (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor), and advanced simulation tools such as FEA for structural and thermal validation.
  • Experience with R&D methodologies, prototyping, and product development lifecycles.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical design principles specific to transformers including enclosure design, insulation support and tank design etc.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work collaboratively on complex technical challenges.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational abilities.
  • Commitment to innovation, continuous improvement and professional integrity.
