UPMC Shadyside is looking to hire a Part-Time Sr. Wound Care Specialist.

Schedule:

  • (2) 10-hour daylight shifts
  • Occasional weekends required

The Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse (WOCN) applies the nursing process within the framework of Relationship-Based Care to provide specialized, holistic care that fosters healing environments. This role collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and communicate individualized plans of care, particularly for patients with wounds, ostomies, fistulas, incontinence, or compromised skin integrity.

Responsibilities
  • Apply clinical judgment and critical thinking to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients with complex skin, wound, and ostomy needs.
  • Conduct stoma site marking and post-discharge follow-up evaluations to ensure continuity of care.
  • Develop comprehensive, patient-centered care plans in partnership with patients and families, considering physical, emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual factors.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, and other care providers to communicate changes in patient conditions and recommend appropriate interventions.
  • Ensure accurate and thorough documentation that promotes effective communication across care teams.
  • Serve as a clinical expert and educator by precepting new hires, students, graduate nurses, and medical residents.
  • Provide formal and informal education (e.g., in-services, lectures, unit-based training) to nursing units and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Participate in policy and procedure development and updates related to wound and ostomy care.
  • Lead or contribute to the skin care committee and other quality improvement initiatives focused on patient safety, satisfaction, and cost-effective care.
  • Engage in continuous professional development by participating in system-wide WOCN meetings, journal clubs, research dissemination, and professional organization activities (e.g., WOCN, NPUAP).
  • Support and promote a healthy workplace by fostering respectful relationships, addressing conflict (e.g., horizontal violence), and modeling cultural awareness and work-life balance.
  • Participate in shared governance, unit-based councils, and hospital-wide initiatives aimed at improving clinical outcomes and nursing practice
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required.
  • BSN required.
  • UPMC approved nursing certification required for Senior title. Certificate of attendance of a WOCN board certified WOCNEP preferred.
  • Annual completion of a VP approved professional contribution selected from one of the corporate nursing goals required for Senior title.
