Description
PURPOSE:   The primary purpose of the Environmental and Laundry Service Support position is to perform a variety of environmental services in the Resident Neighborhoods and throughout the facility. Those performing housekeeping duties are assigned to a Resident Neighborhood or House, where they contribute to fostering a resident centered, homelike environment for the Residents. Those performing laundry duties work primarily out of central laundry but are required to travel throughout the facility to complete job functions. The goal of the position is to provide all residents and Care Team Members with clean, comfortable surroundings on a daily basis and in accordance with all standards as set by the Department of Health for Long-term Care Facilities infection control and management.  All tasks are to be approached in a spirit of teamwork, within and among, departments, to ensure cooperation and completion in an efficient manner.  As with every role, the underlying responsibility is the care and well-being of each Resident. As such, the tasks required in fulfilling the responsibilities of this position, and the day-to-day routines / schedules for completing these tasks, are secondary only to ensuring the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each Resident are met. Specific responsibilities are outlined below in the Key Result Areas.  Incumbents of the position are to work within the scope of practice and under the direction of the Mission Statement, Standards, Policies, and Procedures of The Meadows.   WORK SHIFT:    Environmental and Laundry Services is a 7 day/week function and requires a variety of shifts. (See the Work Flow Guidelines, Housekeeping Checklist, and Laundry Worker Job Duties for specific tasks assigned to shifts).The specific work schedule is established by the Program Lead in consultation with the Administrator. Work schedules are subject to change based on operational need and will be advised in the usual manner.   KEY RESULT AREAS:   Facility Cleaning:    Follow the Housekeeping Checklist for your assigned household or area for daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning responsibilities. These include, but are not limited to the summary below:  * Daily cleaning and disinfecting of all door handles, sinks, toilets, handrails, and switch plates. * Daily spot cleaning of walls, baseboards, windows; dry/damp mop of floors/corridors; disinfect and restock all dispensers; and taski floor scrubber as assigned per schedule. * Empty all garbage containers and place in garbage room daily (In HH = soiled utility, in Common areas = central garbage room) for pick up. * Weekly dusting of rooms, fixtures, and furniture; full window cleaning; and clean fridges, microwaves, stoves. * Monthly full clean/scrub of all washroom walls/tiles, window/door casings, and carbolizing of beds in resident rooms. * Provide Environmental Services Manager with signed checklist detailing your activities on a weekly basis. * Ensure all resident rooms, shared household spaces, offices, and common areas are clean and sanitized as per standards and guidelines. * Use mops and micro fibre pads as per protocol. * Wipers and mops to be taken to neighbourhood laundry room and washing machine started at end of each shift. * Report any needed repairs and/or maintenance requirements to the Environmental Services Program Lead or Neighborhood Lead. * Assist in unloading incoming supplies from trucks and store supplies in designated areas if requires or assigned. * Pick-up supplies and stock housekeeping closets as required.  * Store and replenish all chemicals and soaps for use by Environmental Services.   * Assist in the delivery of supplies to Resident households including: incontinence supplies, paper products and restock storage area. * Clean, organize and maintain the Housekeeping Closets and equipment at end of each shift.   * Respond to emergency housekeeping needs outside of assigned area, when needed. * Perform related duties as assigned by Environmental Services Program Lead or Neighborhood Lead.   Service to Residents:    * Pick up hot breakfast items from Central Kitchen (Early shift Housekeepers), take to assigned household and prepare breakfast menu items for the Residents, assisting CCA with meal service and clean up. Return Breakfast cart to central kitchen. * Work closely with assigned household team during dinner and/or supper meal times; assisting with set-up, portioning, serving, dining, and clean up. * Assist CCAs in responding to call bells in your assigned household, assist residents with basic requests within your scope of practice. Ensure Nursing staff is notified of call bell requests outside your scope of practice. * Assist Central Laundry when required to complete mending, labeling and also alterations for Residents’ personal clothing. * Engage in simple pleasures and household activities whenever possible. * Work closely with Residents, CCAs, Nursing, Food Service, and Recreation within assigned household to determine food preferences and identify opportunities for simple pleasures, spontaneous activities, or special interest activities. * Engage Residents to provide feedback regarding satisfaction with Environmental Services. * Assist CCAs to help Residents get ready and to transfer to and from activities and/or group activities when available. * Assist with set up and delivery of large group and household activities and events as requested.    Laundry:   Follow the Laundry Worker Job Duties list for daily responsibilities. These include, but are not limited to, the summary below:    * Daily collection and processing (washing, drying, folding, etc…) of all soiled linens, excluding Resident personal linen except where requested and required. * Daily delivery and stocking of clean linen closets for all Resident households as per distribution requirements and need.  * Clean, disinfect, and maintain the central laundry work area including all surfaces and equipment. * Monitor all linens processed for quality, repair, stains, and cleanliness. * Label Resident personal laundry where and when requested or required.  * Operate equipment and carry out work in a safe manner adhering to infection prevention guidelines, safe work procedures, and equipment manufacturer’s safe operation guidelines.    General:   * As an employee of The Meadows, actively work to support the Administrator and Management Team in addressing the three plagues of Nursing Home life for Residents (Helplessness, Loneliness & Boredom): * Encourage opportunities for Residents to give as well as receive care  * Cultivate companionship with Residents  * Foster an environment which encourages variety and spontaneity * Assist in enriching residents lives daily through the above means. * Promote and support a positive work environment and assist in stamping out negativity * Support and follow the Meadows policies. * Attend meetings as required.   * Works in collaboration with other departments and team members. * Protect own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, and attending all relevant in-services regarding occupational health and safety.   Follow all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act. * Hold in confidence, all matters pertaining to residents, staff and The Meadows. * Conduct oneself in a professional and respectful manner. * Actively participate in meetings, committees and projects as assigned. * Specific duties and responsibilities are subject to change based on operational needs of the facility.
