Description POSITION SUMMARY: The Staff Accountant supports the Parish Accounting Services department by providing accounting and bookkeeping services to assigned parishes, missions, and parish schools within the Diocese of Charlotte. This position exists to ensure accurate financial recordkeeping, timely reporting, and compliance with diocesan and regulatory accounting standards. The role assists parish leadership by maintaining financial systems that support responsible stewardship of parish resources. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform general accounting and bookkeeping functions for assigned parishes, missions, and parish schools. Prepare and complete monthly financial close processes, including account reconciliations and adjusting journal entries. Maintain general ledger accuracy and ensure proper classification of financial transactions. Process accounts payable transactions and ensure proper documentation and approvals. Record and reconcile cash receipts and deposits. Prepare payroll-related journal entries and assist with payroll reconciliation activities. Assist parishes with annual budgeting processes and financial planning support. Prepare and file sales tax reports and assist with required year-end tax reporting. Support parishes with financial inquiries and assist in maintaining compliance with diocesan financial policies and procedures. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist with special accounting projects or financial analysis as requested by the Parish Accounting Services leadership. Support parish finance staff or volunteers with accounting system questions or reporting needs. Maintain organized accounting documentation and records in accordance with diocesan retention policies. Performs other duties as assigned. Requirements POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Education Associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field preferred. Experience Experience in accounting or bookkeeping; experience supporting a parish, school, or nonprofit organization preferred. Skills Strong understanding of basic accounting principles, financial reporting, and reconciliation processes. Excellent computer proficiency with strong Microsoft Excel skills. Experience with ParishSOFT accounting software preferred. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in financial recordkeeping. Ability to manage multiple parish accounts and deadlines simultaneously. Effective communication and customer service skills when working with parish staff and leadership. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in financial matters.
