SUMMARY

The Staff Accountant - General is responsible for general accounting items, including accounts payable/purchasing and/or payroll. This includes reviewing and analyzing information, preparing internal and external reports, properly monitoring accounts payable, assisting with audits, and maintaining electronic records. This position will cross-train on other Central Services Office roles and serve as an alternate when needed.

EDUCATION/SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum requirement is an Associate’s Degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field and 3-5 years of successful experience in an accounting-related or school finance position. Equivalent combination of related education and experience may also be considered. Bachelor’s Degree and familiarity with Michigan Public School Accounting is preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare all financial statements and records of the local district, as well as the preparation of external reports in accordance with federal, state, and district requirements, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) Accounting Manual.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of district policies and procedures that promote efficiency of operations related to payroll and/or purchasing.
  • Provide for proper internal controls and accounting procedures relative to payroll and/or purchasing.
  • Prepare necessary payroll and/or purchasing accounting entries and reconciliation to the general ledger.
  • Preparation of the payroll and/or purchasing documentation for the district’s annual audit.
  • Provide high-quality ongoing technical training and analytical support on payroll and/or purchasing aspects of the regional financial management software system.
  • Serve as payroll or purchasing backup as necessary.
  • Provide related accounting services to local districts under contract as required.
  • Provide necessary financial data in a timely manner when requested by the Assistant Superintendent or Business Manager.
  • Monitors taxable value information, allocates tax distribution, and collects and balances tax revenue; Assures the filing of all necessary tax forms.
  • Prepares the invoicing, recording, and distribution of all revenues to the district’s various funds.
