Description The Staff Architect, Code supports the development, publication, and interpretation of model codes and standards. This position is ideal for a newly licensed architect with a strong interest in the regulatory framework that shapes the built environment. The role combines architectural expertise with technical writing, project coordination, and stakeholder engagement. The successful candidate will contribute to the code development process while gaining deeper experience in technical leadership and standards development. Key Responsibilities: Project Management & Self-Direction: Manage assigned projects and tasks independently, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of technical content. May serve as secretariat for specific codes or standards. Code Development Expertise: Apply architectural knowledge to support the development and refinement of model codes, with a focus on structure, usability, and compliance with procedural requirements. Stakeholder Collaboration: Coordinate with external authors, subject matter experts, and industry stakeholders to gather, review, and integrate technical content into cohesive work products. Committee Support: Serve as an alternate staff liaison for the Code Action Committee (CAC) and Code Development Committee (CDC), supporting meeting logistics, documentation, and progress tracking. Technical Writing & Review: Draft formal code opinions, proposals, and supporting documentation, ensuring clarity, technical accuracy, and alignment with organizational standards. Software Proficiency: Use ICC tools such as cdpACCESS and the Code Correlation Tool (CCT) to manage code changes and support publication workflows. Special Projects: Participate in strategic initiatives and special assignments as directed by the VP or AVP of Codes. Requirements Essential Skills and Education/Experience: Professional Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in architecture from a NAAB-accredited program. Licensed architect (U.S. jurisdiction). 3–7 years of professional experience in architecture, code consulting, or a related technical field. Familiarity with ICC codes and the model code development process. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with ICC tools (cdpACCESS, CCT) is a plus. Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Interest in building regulations, code development, and public safety. Collaborative mindset with the ability to work across disciplines. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
