Description

WE’RE NOT JUST BUILDING A BANK. WE’RE ARCHITECTING THE FUTURE OF FINANCE. ARE YOU READY TO LEAD THE CHARGE?

At Lunar, we’re on a mission to democratize the power of money and fundamentally change the way we all bank, pay, and invest. Since our journey began in Aarhus in 2015, we’ve rapidly grown into a major player in the Nordics, with vibrant offices in Copenhagen, Aarhus, and Stockholm.
So, who are we? A tech company or a bank? We’re proudly both, breaking free from traditional categories. Here, technology isn’t just an add-on; it’s the very core of our operations. Armed with our own banking license, we directly challenge conventional banks. Our unique blend of cutting-edge technology and financial services gives us the power to shake up an industry ripe for transformation.
As we continue our quest to become the best everyday bank in the Nordics, we’re looking for highly influential and visionary Staff Backend Engineers to join our diverse squads. In this pivotal role, you’ll be instrumental in shaping our technical landscape, driving innovation across multiple teams, and making a lasting impact on the Lunar platform and our engineering culture. This is an opportunity to tackle our most significant technical challenges and act as a force multiplier for our engineering organization.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

We’re seeking highly experienced and impactful engineers who possess a strong leadership orientation, a passion for solving complex problems, and a proven track record of influencing broad technical direction. You should demonstrate:

  • Proven technical leadership, with the ability to influence and drive technical direction across multiple teams or significant engineering areas without direct authority.
  • Outstanding craftsmanship. You not only exemplify mastery in architecting for, building, and operating clean, maintainable, scalable, and performant software, but you also actively elevate the craftsmanship of the entire engineering organization through influential mentorship, advocacy, and by pioneering best practices.
  • Architectural thought leadership, demonstrated by a deep and broad expertise in advanced design patterns and distributed systems. You not only understand but actively shape and champion architectural best practices, guide teams through complex design choices, and make critical, high-impact trade-off decisions necessary for building, scaling, and operating robust, fault-tolerant systems across Lunar.
  • A strong strategic mindset, adept at thinking long-term, anticipating future technical challenges and opportunities, and consistently aligning technical work with overarching business outcomes.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, with a talent for navigating high levels of ambiguity, defining clarity from complex requirements, and making high-judgment decisions with far-reaching consequences.
  • Extensive experience leveraging AI-powered tools and techniques to enhance the software development lifecycle, proven hands-on experience in designing and building AI-powered software products, and a strong desire to share your expertise, best practices, and insights within AI engineering across the wider organization.
  • Outstanding communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts effectively to diverse audiences (from junior engineers to executive leadership), build consensus across teams, and foster strong cross-functional relationships.
  • Proven experience in mentoring and developing senior engineers and technical leads, coupled with a passion for elevating the entire engineering organization through impactful knowledge sharing and community building.
  • A strong curiosity and passion for learning, continuously staying updated with new technologies and industry trends, and proactively identifying how they can be leveraged to solve Lunar’s most pressing challenges and unlock new opportunities.
Responsibilities

As a Staff Backend Engineer at Lunar, you will operate with a broad scope of influence, driving technical excellence, strategy, and innovation across the organization. You will:

  • Lead the design, development, and evolution of highly complex, scalable, and resilient software systems that form the backbone of the Lunar platform, often spanning multiple services, teams, and domains.
  • Spearhead critical architectural decisions, establish, and evangelize engineering best practices, patterns, and standards across multiple teams and the broader engineering organization to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Define and drive the technical strategy for significant parts of our ecosystem, tackling the most ambiguous and complex challenges from ideation through to long-term operational excellence and influencing our overall technical direction.
  • Collaborate with and influence a wide range of stakeholders, including product leadership, senior engineering peers, and business units, to align technical vision with strategic company objectives and ensure cohesive execution.
  • Drive long-term technical vision and roadmap for critical domains, anticipating future technological needs and ensuring our technology stack evolves effectively to meet upcoming challenges and opportunities.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and sponsorship to senior engineers and teams, fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning at scale.
  • Act as a technical multiplier, enabling other teams and engineers to deliver more effectively by providing leverage through your architectural guidance, strategic technical contributions, and the systems you build.
