Summary: Responsible for teaching theory and clinical components of the state-approved nurse aide training program. Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, including state and federal nursing home licensure standards. Conduct new employee orientation in the absence of the staff development manager. Assist with the implementation of the Employee Health Program. Ensures the provision of care is consistent with the Mission and Vision Statements of Birmingham Green, as established by the Board of Directors, by performing the duties outlined below. Assist the Staff Development Manager as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
§ Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
§ Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence.
§ Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively relate, present information, and respond tactfully to questions from residents, families, administration, medical staff, nursing personnel, other department supervisors and the general public.
§ Desire to work with the elderly using high nursing skills and standards. Possession of strong leadership, supervisory, and organizational skills.
§ Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
§ Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to patiently and tactfully deal with resident or staff problems in all situations. Ability to make independent and prudent decisions within scope of responsibilities and assignments.
§ Ability to present information to staff of all levels including senior executives.
Education and Experience:
§ Current unencumbered RN license to work in the Commonwealth of Virginia through college, associate degree, or three-year diploma school.
§ CPR certification.
§ Three years’ experience teaching adults, preferably in a nurse aide training program.
§ Several years experience in a long-term care setting.
§ Knowledge and experience related to the physical and emotional needs of the elderly.
§ Knowledge of the laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long-term care, including as it relates to education.
§ Proficient in use of MS Office and general computer programs.
Essential Functions:
§ Direct and provide classroom and clinical instruction demonstrating knowledge and clinical competence.
§ Collaboratively work with faculty, students and staff.
§ Coordinate CNA open house, interviews, and reference checks. Make offer and send for drug screening.
§ Demonstrate evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of students, residents and staff.
§ Demonstrate a willingness to develop new knowledge and clinical skills as required by the curriculum.
§ Maintain accurate documentation of student’s performance.
§ Participates in survey (inspections) made by authorized government agencies.
§ Assumes charge, as needed, in emergency situations that may arise on the units or within the facility.
§ Assist with development and implementation of new educational programs.
§ Works with nursing to ensure preceptors (CNA’s and nurses), are following guidelines.
§ Works “hands-on” with employees on the floor to ensure proper training and education when necessary.
Related Duties and Responsibilities:
§ Assists with training of employees.
§ Participates in committee meetings and attends meetings as assigned.
§ Implements recommendations from established committees as directed.
§ Responsible for addressing student issues.
§ Assures that students follow the facilities’ established policies and procedures at all times, including dress codes.
§ Works with staff development manager to ensure documented educational compliance.
§ Develops and maintains a good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel, as well as other departments within the facility.
§ Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the units and shifts.
§ Attends daily stand-up meetings and reports the status of residents and other related matters.
§ Monitors students to assure that they are following established safety regulations in the use of equipment and supplies.
§ Ensures that nursing service personnel participate in and conduct all fire, safety, and disaster preparedness drills in a safe and professional manner.
§ Ensures that students follow established infection control procedures when isolation precautions become necessary.
§ Follows safety guidelines at all times.
§ Ensures that students follow the lifting policies/procedures as established by the facility or other regulatory agencies.
§ Maintains the confidentiality of all resident information and upholds resident’s rights at all times.
§ Ensures that all nursing care is provided in privacy.
§ Ensures that students are knowledgeable of the residents’ rights and responsibilities.
§ Maintains all certifications necessary for employment.
§ Demonstrates flexibility, open mindedness, and versatility in adjusting to changing environments and requirements as necessary.
§ Commits to continually improving his/her skills through participation in educational opportunities whether offered on the job, within, or outside of the facility, to increase knowledge of work-related issues.
§ Participates in “Manager-on-Duty” (MOD), on-call duties, rotating with other management staff.
