How you’ll make a difference?
The Staff Engineer is the primary technical leader for a program. The Staff Engineer is responsible for establishing the best engineering practices for product design and testing. The staff engineer must teach best practices to junior engineers and function as a mentor for general medical device engineering within the company. The Staff Engineer is responsible for providing technical input supported by appropriate analyses to management on major issues. The Staff Engineer must research, design, validate and deliver solutions to the most challenging clinical problems submitted to Orthofix. Through regular interaction with the developers, users and company colleagues involved in the design process, the staff engineer must conform to and continuously improve the guidelines described in the company’s quality policies relating to all technical aspects of product development
What will your duties and responsibilities be?

  • Design and development of innovative spinal implants and instruments.
  • Properly utilize and teach CAD software provided in 2D & 3D environments
  • Expert in and ability to teach standard drafting principles
  • Properly follow standard drafting principles
  • Prepare testing protocols and reports
  • Prepare and present technical reports/presentations
  • Participate in and ensure accuracy of design review meetings
  • View surgical procedures in operating rooms
  • Support industry trade shows
  • Support filed questions related to products when necessary
  • Mentor engineering staff

What skills and experience will you need?

  • 8-12 years of experience.
  • Expert in modeling and drafting in CAD (Solidworks experience a plus)
  • Expert in principles and application of linear FEA
  • Understanding of principles and application of GD&T
  • Comprehensive and current knowledge of medically acceptable materials; i.e., titanium alloys, stainless steels, etc.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of machining practices as it relates to design for manufacturability
  • Comprehensive and current knowledge of inspection tools and methods
  • Excellent Technical writing skills
  • Exceptional time management skills

What qualifications are preferred?

  • Experience in designing orthopedic or spine hardware
  • Excellent understanding of biomechanics and human anatomy
  • Ability to work with legal counsel to assure protection and maintenance of intellectual property
  • Familiarity with quality systems in a regulated industry
