Description

About Us:
Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies is a joint venture between two industry leaders with a clear vision for automotive’s next chapter. From operating systems to zonal controllers to cloud and connectivity solutions, we’re addressing the challenges of electric vehicles through technology that will set the standards for software-defined vehicles around the world.
The road to the future is uncharted. By combining our expertise across connectivity, AI, security and more, we’ll map a new way forward. Working together, we’ll create a future that’s more connected, more intelligent, more sustainable for everyone.
Role Summary:
At Rivian & Volkswagen Group, our mission is to develop vehicles powered by software and data. We leverage the power of big data from our customer and commercial fleets to deliver intelligent, reliable, and sustainable vehicle experiences.
As a Generative AI Engineer, you will focus on building and integrating large language models (LLMs) and generative systems that enhance vehicle diagnostics and engineering workflows. Your work will directly contribute to faster problem resolution, improved vehicle reliability, and greater efficiency for engineering teams.
This role is ideal for someone excited by the intersection of generative AI, reasoning systems, and real-world vehicle intelligence — with the drive to move quickly from research concepts into production-ready solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and fine-tune LLMs for diagnostics, requirement understanding, and vehicle code analysis.
  • Build retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines leveraging Rivian’s internal data and documentation.
  • Integrate generative models into agentic frameworks for automated reasoning and task execution.
  • Partner with platform teams to optimize inference latency, cost, and accuracy for real-world deployments.
  • Design evaluation and safety frameworks for generative models in production.
  • Explore multimodal applications (telemetry + text) to deliver richer diagnostic insights.
  • Contribute to the architecture and strategy of generative AI systems and mentor junior engineers.

Qualifications:

  • B.S./M.S. in Computer Science, AI/ML, or related discipline.
  • Experience with LLMs (GPT, LLaMA, Mistral, etc.) and generative architectures (Transformers, VAEs).
  • Strong skills in Python, LangChain, vector DBs, and RAG pipelines.
  • Familiarity with applied MLOps for generative models (deployment, monitoring, retraining).
  • Interest in vehicle diagnostics, agentic frameworks, and applied reasoning systems.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and ability to translate research into practical tools.

Pay Disclosure:
Salary Range Rate for California Based Applicants: $206,500.00 - $258,100.00 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
Benefits Summary: Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies provides robust medical/Rx, dental and vision insurance packages for full-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment.
