Job Purpose
To maintain the highest quality of person centred care to our residents within the Bon Secours Care Village, (based on the Lee Road, Cork) through the provision of a stimulating environment in which the emotional, social, physical and psychological needs of the individuals are met. To ensure that the Bon Secours Care Village policies and procedures are adhered to at all times. To act as a resource and support for Clinical Nurse Manager. To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care to the highest professional and ethical standards within the model of nursing care practiced in the Bon Secours Care Village. To holistic, person centred care, promoting optimum independence and enhancing the quality of life for service users.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Practice and support the Bon Secours Mission and Values, policies, procedures, guidelines and new initiatives as directed by the hospital. Work within the guidelines of NMBI.
  • Maintain a high standard of professional behaviour and be accountable for their practice.
  • Be aware of ethical policies and procedures which pertain to their area of practice
  • Manage the Health Care Assistants in providing high quality direct and indirect care
  • Manage Student Nurses and support their learning - complete their clinical learning outcomes and competence booklet forms. Communicate progress with the Clinical Placement Co-ordinator effectively.
  • Assist and participate in the training and orientation of new and existing staff.
  • Work towards improving individual and hospital processes and practices. Identify areas for quality improvement with regard to gaining HIQA Standards
  • Assist residents at functions, gatherings and at meal-times
  • Provide effective and efficient holistic nursing care. Assess the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and cultural needs of the residents. Plan and provide care in conjunction with medical practitioner, clinical staff and other disciplines
  • Liaise and co-operate with the Infection Control Policy in the prevention of hospital acquired infection
  • Comply with the medication policy and to ensure that regulations for safe keeping and recording of scheduled drugs are adhered to
  • Be accountable for decision making with regard to the residents nursing care and refer appropriately to the Clinical Nurse Manager
  • Provide appropriate and timely education and information to the patient, their family and be an advocate for the individual patient and for their family
  • Develop and promote good interpersonal relationships with residents, their family and the interdisciplinary care team in the promotion of person centred care
  • Respond effectively and quickly in an emergency situation
  • Comply with the Care of the Dying policy in providing end-of-life-care
  • Report and consult with the senior nursing management on clinical issues as appropriate.
  • Report verbally and in writing pertinent resident care information to appropriate nursing / medical officer and other clinical staff
  • Demonstrate flexibility by rotating / assisting in other units as required to meet nursing resource needs
  • Approach interpersonal relationships in a manner that promotes a healthy working environment
  • Liaise with Catering Manager regarding residents’ meals, special diets etc.
  • Act as a link nurse or resource for specific areas such as infection control or documentation as delegated
  • Provide and maintain a safe environment for self, colleagues, and residents. Be aware of health and safety issues
  • Ensure all nursing and non-nursing procedures are carried out professionally and safely
  • Ensure that the care setting is maintained in good order and that all supplies are adequate
  • Report adverse occurrences in line with hospital policy, including incident reports, near miss reports, medication error reports
  • Ensure that the equipment is safe to use and report any malfunctions in a timely manner
  • Respect and maintain the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of the resident at all times
  • Ensure all documentation relating to residents is accurately maintained. Ensure that the resident’s care plan is updated in a timely manner.
  • Ensure documentation pertaining to the residents is stored in a confidential manner as per HIQA regulations
  • Maintain professional standards including data and resident confidentiality. Ensure that records are maintained as per GDPR Hospital policies and in accordance with relevant legislation
