Full training and mentoring is given to all theatre nurses through a preceptorship programme, as well as funding to develop their expertise by supporting post graduate education programmes. We are committed to the professional development & education of all our nursing team.
Currently our theatre complex comprises 4 theatres, a 6 bedded recovery area, theatre reception area, facilitating DOSA, and St John’s Urology procedure room. We have 2 new state of the art theatres, one of which is a hybrid vascular theatre with cutting edge technology, both are supported with separate anaesthetic rooms. The MUH specialises in the provision of general, urology, vascular, colorectal, upper GI, Hepatobiliary, both open and laparoscopic operations, and our theatre nurses expand their skills set in Anaesthetics, Scrub/Circulating, and Recovery as they are rotated between specialities. We are a tertiary referral centre. Our department is staffed by a dedicated team of nurses, doctors, anaesthetists, porters and healthcare assistants. The theatre runs electives lists 5 days a week incorporating non electives surgeries, cooperating emergency out of hours surgeries.

Responsibilities - The post holder will be responsible for;

  • Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the nursing care of assigned patients
  • Practice nursing according to the Code of Professional Conduct as laid down by the Nursing Board and Professional Guidelines.
  • Ensure patients are cared for in the optimum clinical environment, adhering to all nursing and hospital wide policies and guidelines
  • Share professional knowledge and skills with colleagues
  • Documentation to be recorded in a professional, legible and timely fashion
  • Follow appropriate lines of authority within the Nurse Management Structure.

Eligibility Criteria - Candidates:

  • Be registered, or be eligible for registration, in the general nurse division of the register of nurses kept by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland [NMBI] (Bord Altranais agus Cnaimhseachais na hEireann)
  • Experience in the acute hospital environment within last three years is essential
  • Applications will be welcome from nurses who have recently graduated
  • Specialist areas - Experience and course desirable

Please note all applicants will be entitled to apply for an enhanced nurse contract, once that they meet the eligibility criteria of the position, i.e. on point 4 or greater of the staff nurse scale.
