Post Context The mission of the JATEC as one of the strategic pillars of the NATO - Ukraine evolving jointness is to provide for the NATO - Ukraine interoperability, to contribute to the development of NATO and Ukraine’s transformation in defence, deterrence, crisis prevention, crisis management and cooperative security, and helping Ukraine achieve membership of NATO. By fostering a Joint civilian-military and Joint NATO - Ukraine approach, the JATEC aims to strengthen the overall defence capabilities and strategic alignment of NATO and Ukraine, ensuring they are better prepared to face current and future challenges. The Resources and Management Division (RMD) acts on all internal management and resource related issues, ensuring the effective and efficient operation of the centre. RMD coordinates with the Host Nation and is responsible for JATEC’s: Support from the NCI Agency, Human Resources Management, Base Support, JATEC Security, Communication and Information Systems (CIS), Registry services, Ukraine Registry, and Linguistic support. The Staff Assistant (Linguist) works closely with and reports to the Staff Officer (Linguist) and provides linguistic support in Ukrainian and English languages, to include working-level translations between both languages. The work entails, editing, revision, formatting and proofreading of documents and publications mainly in the English language and vice-versa. The incumbent also builds and maintains a reference terminology database, ensures that staff members use NATO Agreed terminology and coordinates and may assist with linguistic support for other NATO bodies as the need arises. Principal Duties Support Staff Officer (Linguist) in the performance of their duties. To include support with translation of official documents including, but not limited to, budgets and financial statements, reports, correspondence, articles and other texts from English into Ukrainian and vice versa for JATEC as required, ensuring NATO and JATEC compliance with a professional business writing style. Provide interpretation, from English into Ukrainian and vice versa, at JATEC events as required. Coordinate with commercial providers in instances where official translation is required between English and Ukrainian. Provide editorial assistance to the JATEC’s professional publications and periodicals in a non-classified format. Assists in editing documents for the Public Affairs Office to be published in both English and Ukrainian. Translate documents between English and Ukrainian at a working-level where professional level/official translations are not required. Coordinates with other NATO HQs, agencies, offices and commercial providers for official translations and interpretation requests in other languages as required. Support the collation of material for the improvement and updating of glossaries, particularly of technical/military subjects. Keep track of JATEC terminology and build and maintain a translation and terminology database between English and Ukrainian. Communicate with and represent the JATEC within the linguistic community in NATO, as well as attend linguistic services’ conferences and workshops. Provide administrative support to Staff Officer (Linguist) as required. Essential Qualifications/Experience Higher Secondary education and completed higher vocational training leading to a formal technical or professional certification with 3 years function related experience, or Secondary education and completed advanced vocational training leading to a professional qualification or professional accreditation with 5 years post related experience. At least three years of experience in revising, editing, formatting and proofreading of documents and publications in the English language. Experience providing working-level translations and revisions of documents, in a variety of subject matters, from Ukrainian into English and vice-versa. Language Technologies. While language may be a human-centric capability, the incumbent must also be able to use language-specific computer tools and keep abreast of emerging technical solutions, such as computer-assisted translation and terminology tools, voice recognition software and speaking dictionaries, interpretation equipment and dictation systems. Must be a Ukrainian native speaker. Language English - SLP 3322 - (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) The HQ's host nation language is required. Desirable Qualifications/Experience: Knowledge of NATO organization and associated terminology. Working knowledge in NATO IKM Tools (e.g. SharePoint, DHS, TT+). Prior experience working in a multinational environment. Attributes/Competencies Personal Attributes Works with minimal supervision. Considerable maturity and professional judgement is required to make recommendations and, possibly, decisions in accordance with NATO and JATEC’s Direction and Guidance. Possesses good interpersonal and excellent communication skills, poise and tact. Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment. Excellent attention to detail. Professional Contacts The incumbent works closely with a wide range of JATEC Staff seeking linguistic support in the Ukrainian and English languages. Maintains external contacts with other linguistic personnel of other NATO bodies and professional organizations. Contribution To Objectives The post indirectly impacts JATEC’s ability to achieve its overall organisational objectives. It has a direct impact on the quality of the form and content of documents and publications issued by JATEC. It will also be expected to support on-going initiatives aimed at developing an organization that is flexible and open to change. Security Clearance The successful applicant will be required to apply for and receive a NATO SECRET Security Clearance prior to final confirmation of contract and commencement of employment. Contract This position is linked to a specific NATO project and is for a limited duration of 3 (three) years only. Serving NATO International Civilian staff will be offered a contract in accordance with the NATO Civilian Personnel Regulations. Newly recruited staff will be offered a three year definite duration contract.
