East Georgia State College provides more than 1,700 students access to affordable, quality higher education. Students can pursue associate degrees, career-focused bachelor’s degrees, and transfer pathways to other institutions. The main campus in Swainsboro offers a tight-knit community with residential options. The beautiful 400-acre pine forest campus has two small lakes, a challenging 18-hole disc golf course, and an active apiary, and is one of only 115 Bee Campuses across the nation. EGSC also operates instructional sites in Statesboro and Augusta that allow students to benefit from the small class sizes and affordability of EGSC while experiencing the vibrant student life of the large universities with which the College shares space.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, tutors assist students in the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) at EGSC. Tutors provide assistance to students seeking additional instruction in academic courses; primarily math, reading, and English, though assistance in other subjects may need to be provided occasionally. Tutor assistance may include, but is not limited to, the following: reviewing class material, working on solutions to problems, formulating and expanding on ideas for papers, providing assistance and guidance on instructional software programs (such as MyMathLab), creating and working practice test questions, discussing textbook readings, etc. Interaction with professors for clarification on desired learning outcomes or material to be covered may be necessary.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship of having had a similar position for 1 year.
• Additional education may be considered in place of experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Some college or college degree

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

• Math Concepts from College Algebra through Precalculus
• Basic English concepts - grammar, sentence structure, formatting
• Basic Literature concepts - understanding, analyzing
• Reading comprehension in all subject areas
• The ability to discuss textbook readings in all subject areas
• The ability to provide assistance and guidance on software programs, such as MyMathLab
• The ability to create and work through practice test questions and assist students as they work through the solutions to problems
• The ability to help students formulate and expand on ideas for papers
• The ability to divide attention between two or more students
• The ability to be patient with struggling learners
• The ability to interact with instructors for clarification on desired learning outcomes or material to be covered

• Provide assistance to students seeking additional instruction in academic courses
• Provide tutoring and supplemental support to students primarily in English composition and/or College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Statistics, and other academic areas.
• Ensure students who utilize tutoring services are signing in and out via the ACE computer on Grades First
• Provide feedback to professors whose students are seeking assistance in the ACE
• Proctoring exams when necessary
