WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

Responsibilities

WHAT’S THE ROLE

The Olefins Hot Side & Auxiliaries Technical Support Engineer (TSE) provides technical assurance and support for the Olefins area of the Deer Park Site. This role provides mentoring and guidance to the process engineering team supporting the area (typically including 2 – 3 Operation Support Engineers).

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Provide proactive technical support to help ensure that olefins cracking furnaces, downstream quench systems, and numerous Auxiliaries are operated in a safe, environmentally sound, and efficient manner in accordance with established guidelines. Dimensions: 12 cracking furnaces of various designs with a combined ethylene production capacity of over 700 ktpa, downstream fractionation units, process condensate and dilution steam systems, various Auxiliaries (i.e. flares, cooling water towers, boilers, fuel system, etc.)
  • Provide the process engineering Technical Assurance function for Management of Change requirements in your assigned area and provide backup for other areas’ TSE’s. Ensure Process Engineering activities are conducted fully in line with Shell Group and governmental regulations
  • Propose appropriate operating targets for the process units and systems to meet established feed and product specifications. Audit unit/system performance against those targets. Propose changes to enhance the performance of the units/systems within the established operating boundaries. Identify and define process improvement opportunities and develop the business cases for justification
  • Review the weekly and monthly operating plans for proper representation of your operating units and systems. Identify and communicate issues to the appropriate technical and operations personnel. Participate, as appropriate, in the operating meeting cadences to ensure process issues or opportunities are fully understood and addressed. Lead (or assist) in evaluation of complex technical or operational problems, problem definition and ensuring solutions
  • Ensure process team engagement with Shell P&T specialists to keep them informed as to the major unit/systems issues and progress in resolving those. Collaborate with P&T regularly to advance medium and long-term technical initiatives. Actively participate in the Shell-wide Hot Side network, driving cross-site cooperation & learning
  • Coordinate the efforts of other resources to address specific problems or for scheduled startups or shutdowns. Lead the Deer Park Furnace Improvement Team (FIT) to drive short-term and long-term reliability, operability, and process safety improvements of the cracking furnaces. Provide support and leadership to multidiscipline teams addressing cross organizational issues / opportunities. Facilitate problem resolution when the problem requires Process Engineering knowledge and expertise
  • Provide technical documentation to ensure knowledge retention, continuity, and organizational learning. Provide technical input & overview for turnaround scoping & planning activities as well as startup/shutdown procedures. Provide technical guidelines for high impact events & abnormal situations. Provide support to long term strategy planning for the units/systems. May prepare or present the technical content of specialized Operator/Craft training
  • Provide process engineering participation in regulatory mandated PHA’s and drive resolution of resulting action items. Provide process engineering participation in Incident Investigations within assigned areas
  • Provide direct mentoring and coaching to Operation Support Engineers (OSEs), also potentially supervise summer intern(s). Collaborate with the Process Engineering Supervisor on formal development of less experienced OSE’s. Occasional backfill support of Cold Side portions of Deer Park Olefins as needed, occasional backfill of Process Engineering Supervisor in administrative functions
