Description

Under the direction of the Program Services Supervisor, coordinate and implement procedures aligned with the department’s Abnormal Behavior Plan to support colony animal well-being. Responsibilities include responding to behavioral concerns and assessment requests for animals exhibiting signs of psychological distress; conducting timely, data-driven behavioral evaluations; recommending and assessing the effectiveness of intervention strategies; and managing the Abnormal Behavior database. Additional duties include effective communication with Principal Investigators and Primate Services staff, coordinating outdoor abnormal behavior monitoring, leading colony-wide rounds to identify behavioral concerns, and conducting routine alopecia assessments. Prepare reports as requested by the supervisor. May also support other components of the Behavioral Management Program, including socialization assessments and work in the Enrichment Kitchen. Actively participate in departmental and interdepartmental meetings. Sound judgment in behavioral health management and enrichment planning is essential.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - FOR FULL CONSIDERATION, APPLICANTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO UPLOAD LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION IF REQUIRED OF THE POSITION

  • Experience in reliably observing, and recording the identifying normal and abnormal behaviors of captive animals living in various settings (e.g., indoor pair-housing, outdoor small and large social groups) using data driven approaches.
  • Experience in supporting scientific research, which includes becoming familiar with research protocols, preparing written summaries, updating animal records, and preparing demographic reports.
  • Knowledge and skills to manage and analyze behavioral data with analytical tools and methodologies used by animal behavior experts and care management principles in a large biomedical research facility
  • Applied knowledge of regulations pertaining to the husbandry of research animals, particularly nonhuman primates, including USDA, ILAR, AALAS, and AAALAC.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, animal sciences, or an equivalent field.
  • Experience with applied experimental design, data management software (e.g., Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel), data recording software (e.g., HanDBase), and statistical analysis (e.g., in R).
  • Experience managing behavioral projects, where organizational skills and attention to detail are essential to meet operational goals.
  • Experience and training in biohazard containment procedures (biosafety and bio-surveillance) necessary to perform duties in a ABSL 2, 2+ and 3facilities.
  • Organizational and time management skills to balance multiple tasks and/or move project aims forward by communicating either verbally or by email effectively.
  • Technical skills in behavioral management of non-human primates with a focus on animal behavioral assessment, socialization, and enrichment principles and practices.
