If you’re passionate about redefining secure communication and want to be part of an innovative team, join us as a Staff Software Engineer - Web. Together, let’s build a world where privacy and security shape the future of communication.

ABOUT US

We’re building a secure, easy-to-use, and feature-rich communication tool with the latest technologies. We don’t just create software — we’re also impacting national and international committees. Our research and development occur at our Berlin headquarters and other locations in Europe and the USA, where we embrace diversity and adhere to the strictest data protection standards. We see regulations as a foundation supporting our commitment to secure our customer’s communication

Responsibilities

As a Staff Software Engineer – Web, you will play a pivotal role in setting the technical direction across Wire’s web and desktop applications. You will collaborate cross-functionally, influence multiple teams, and drive architectural decisions that shape the future of secure real-time communication. Your impact will extend beyond writing code — you will elevate engineering standards, mentor others, and lead initiatives that improve scalability, performance, and developer experience across the stack.Technical Leadership

  • Own and evolve the architecture of our web and Electron desktop apps, ensuring performance (rendering, memory), scalability (modularity, extensibility), and maintainability (testability, code clarity).
  • Lead key technical initiatives, such as modernizing legacy code, improving DX, and driving secure-by-default development practices (CSP, XSS, Electron hardening, E2EE).
  • Guide technical standards and decision-making through cross-team RFCs and close collaboration with backend and infra on APIs, observability, and deployment

You’ve built and maintained complex frontend systems across web and desktop environments and know what it means to carry a feature from rough idea to production. You think in systems, advocate for your decisions with clarity, and know how to move teams forward — even when the path isn’t obvious. You lead by example, scaling your impact through architectural vision, technical mentorship, and an ability to align teams across domains.Technical Skills

  • 10+ years in frontend or full-stack development, with at least 2 years operating at a Staff or Principal level.
  • Deep knowledge of React, frontend architecture patterns, and performance optimization for real-time apps.
  • Proficient with client-side storage (e.g. IndexedDB), Web Workers, and working with large in-browser data flows.
  • Solid understanding of modular frontend infrastructure, monorepos, and build systems (Webpack, Vite, Nx, etc).
  • Proven experience working with secure messaging protocols (e.g., MLS, WebRTC, Encryption at Rest, or other E2EE flows) is a strong advantage — especially in privacy-focused applications or Electron-based desktop environments.
  • Familiar with cloud storage integration (e.g., S3), media/file flows, and client-side streaming approaches.
  • Expertise in scalable testing strategies, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing, with hands-on experience maintaining robust test coverage across frontend systems.
  • Experience designing and evolving CI/CD pipelines using tools like GitHub Actions and Jenkins
