Staff Software Engineer Job Description We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer to contribute to the development of Harvester, an open-source hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) solution powered by cutting-edge cloud-native technologies such as Kubernetes, KubeVirt, Kube-OVN, and Longhorn. Harvester is designed to orchestrate and manage virtualization, container workloads, and Kubernetes clusters running on virtualization machines. We’re looking for an individual with strong self-motivation who thrives on working with system-level software and open-source projects. In this role, you’ll help elevate technologies within Harvester, Longhorn, and Rancher. Join our team to deliver groundbreaking open-source solutions and contribute to the container revolution! Responsibilities Develop features and fix bugs using Kubernetes-related solutions & frameworks. Implement test cases for improving product quality. Assist with design and implementation reviews. Collaborate with internal and external communities to address reported issues. Collaborate with support teams to address customer issue escalations effectively. Foster cross-team collaboration to ensure successful feature delivery, bug fixes, and knowledge sharing. Develop features and resolve bugs using Kubernetes-related solutions and frameworks. Preferred Experience & Skills Proficiency in at least one programming language, such as Go, Python, C/C++, or similar statically typed languages. Experience with feature development and bug-fix lifecycles. Knowledge of testing methodologies. Familiarity with CI/CD methodologies. Proven ability to collaborate with support teams on escalation resolution. Experience with Agile development practices. Background in open-source development. Demonstrated ability to share technical knowledge effectively. Experience working remotely with teams across multiple time zones. Success in addressing technical debt and enhancing development productivity. Knowledge of system-level software, virtualization, software-defined networking (SDN), distributed systems, and open-source development. Solid understanding of Overlay networking and Linux networking stack. Familiarity with Open vSwitch (OVS), OVN. Experience developing solutions based on Kubernetes or similar platforms. Qualifications Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience. 3+ years of experience in software development with a focus on Software-Defined Networking (SDN). 8+ years of experience in system software development on Linux and distributed systems. Enthusiasm for tackling diverse technological challenges—ready to learn, resolve, and grow. A proactive “can-do” attitude to drive impactful change. Hands-on approach to problem-solving and execution. An automation mindset, committed to streamlining processes for improved productivity.
