Under mandates of the California Safe Drinking Water Act of 1996 (California Health and Safety Code Section 116365), amended 1999, the Water Toxicology Section of the Pesticide and Environmental Toxicology Branch performs risk assessments of environmental contaminants and develops Public Health Goals (PHGs) for contaminants in drinking water, based exclusively on public health considerations. The Section also provides guidance and support to other branches and offices of CalEPA and state government, local health authorities, and the general public on matters related to health effects of water contaminants.
Under the general direction of the Water Toxicology Section Chief, the Staff Toxicologist (Specialist) acts as the subject matter expert on the toxicological properties of chemical contaminants in drinking water, with an emphasis on microplastics; works as a team leader and performs health effects evaluations and risk assessments involving exposures to chemicals in California drinking water; interprets and incorporates toxicological studies on more complex chemicals and problems into a cohesive finished product; and provides rationale and documentation on scientific determinations.
