Description The Start-Up and Commissioning Technician is responsible for ensuring all systems, equipment, and controls are installed, tested, and operating according to design specifications before project handover. This role involves working on construction sites occupied and unoccupied, demo work of HVAC units, troubleshooting, providing checkout of HVAC units, and starting up new equipment and providing data. As a technician you will work with following type of units; water source heat pumps, pumps, mini split units, package/rooftop units, VRF, and VAV's/PIU's. Requirements Technicians will collaborate closely with engineers, contractors, and clients to ensure project completion meets performance and safety standards. Equipment Start-Up & Commissioning Perform start-up and commissioning of newly installed HVAC systems including: Water Source Heat Pumps Pumps and Hydronic Systems Mini Split Systems Packaged and Rooftop Units (RTUs) Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Systems Variable Air Volume (VAV) / Powered Induction Units (PIUs) Verify system operation matches design intent, sequence of operations, and manufacturer’s guidelines. Record and submit start-up data, performance metrics, and control readings. Troubleshoot start-up issues and collaborate with controls, electrical, and mechanical teams to resolve problems. Equipment Checkout & Testing Conduct system checkout for wiring, piping, and control verification prior to energizing equipment. Verify power, control wiring terminations, and sensor calibration. Ensure all safety and operational controls are functional prior to turnover. Documentation and reporting Demolition & Replacement Work Perform demo and retrofit work on existing HVAC systems in both occupied and unoccupied construction environments. Safely disconnect, remove, and replace units as required by project scope. Coordination & Communication Work closely with project managers, foremen, and controls technicians to ensure systems meet performance and turnover requirements. Communicate effectively with clients, general contractors, and other trades during project execution. Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications Skills & Knowledge: Strong understanding of HVAC systems, controls, and electrical wiring. Proficient in reading blueprints, wiring diagrams, and control schematics. Familiar with BAS/controls systems (Johnson, Trane, Carrier, Daikin, etc.). Ability to use test instruments such as multimeters, manometers, and refrigerant gauges. Excellent troubleshooting, documentation, and time management skills. Qualifications: EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification OSHA 10/30 Certification Successfully pass a background check and drug screening Become a member of the Local 72 Union Minimum 7 years of experience in Commercial HVAC service, start-up, or commissioning on commercial construction projects.
