KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess and maintain a current Certificate of Qualification as a Stationary Engineer Third Class or better, in accordance with O. Reg. 219/01 as amended.
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class “G” Driver’s License and must have or shall be required to obtain required City permit for assigned vehicle(s) and equipment(s).
  • If offered employment in this classification without holding any Ministry of the Environment (MOE) Operator Certification of Competency-Wastewater Treatment System or an Operatorin-Training (OIT) license, the successful applicant will be required to write and pass the Level 1 certification exam in the appropriate discipline within 90 days from their employment start date in this classification and must also attain their full Level 1 license within one year from their start date in this classification and maintain the license while in this classification.
  • Must have a Grade 12 secondary school diploma, or equivalent as recognized by the MOE.
Responsibilities
  • Operates, maintains and repairs process equipment and related appurtenances in an advanced water or wastewater facility including but not limited to pumps, pressure vessels, valves, compressors, gas engines, electric generators, boilers, HVAC systems, sludge de-watering equipment, incinerators, digesters, chemical feed equipment, filtration equipment, floatation systems and refrigeration units etc. in compliance with O. Reg. 219/1.
  • Accountable for personal performance and promoting optimum team performance in achieving work area process objectives in Toronto Water. Fosters and supports a team environment.
  • Assumes responsibility for the operation of related equipment in the applicable work area and provides technical and operational expertise as required.
  • Provides work direction to staff as per O. Reg. 219/01.
  • Inspects, monitors, tests, records and analyzes process equipment to optimize performance, taking into consideration cost, local and/or facility-wide process impacts, equipment capabilities, possible environmental impact, etc., and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements and standard operating procedures. Conducts tests and adds chemicals as required.
  • Utilizes operating/maintenance systems such as the Process Control System (PCS), Electronic Operating System (EOPS), Work Management System (WMS), and Performance and Operations Management System (POMS) to ensure optimum operating performance.
  • Makes timely operational decisions and addresses/responds to alarm conditions and emergencies to ensure operational sustainability and efficiency within established performance and quality limits.
  • Isolates and locks out equipment to support/perform maintenance activities.
  • Ensures cleanliness and safety of facilities by maintaining and cleaning work areas and promoting same.
  • Utilizes process operations, sampling and laboratory analysis results to interpret equipment performance. Performs process control and operational laboratory tests, boiler water tests as required.
  • Maintains documentation of all work area activities using a manual and/or computerized system including but not limited to logbook administration, computer records review, accident reports, alarm responses, etc.
  • Initiates material purchase orders, issues materials documents, receives materials, maintains inventories and records and follows up on maintenance quality.
  • Initiates the call-in of other applicable/qualified staff on evening and weekends to deal with emergencies.
  • Trains, directs, assists and supports skilled, semi-skilled, unskilled staff and trainees as required.
  • Performs all work assignments safely in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Regulations that apply to this work and other related legislation.
