The Steel Detailer Checker ensures the accuracy, constructability, and compliance of all shop and erection drawings before fabrication and field installation, playing a vital role in maintaining Sure Steel’s commitment to quality, efficiency, and safety. Overview: The Steel Detailer Checker is responsible for reviewing and verifying structural and miscellaneous steel detailing drawings to ensure accuracy, compliance with project specifications, and alignment with field constructability. This role supports the pre-construction, engineering, and field teams by minimizing errors and rework, ensuring timely release of drawings for fabrication and erection, and upholding Sure Steel’s quality standards across all projects. Key Responsibilities: 1. Drawing Review and Quality Assurance: • Check structural and miscellaneous steel shop and erection drawings for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with design documents. • Ensure drawings adhere to AISC standards, project specifications, and Sure Steel detailing requirements. • Verify member sizes, dimensions, weld symbols, connection details, and part quantities. 2. Constructability and Coordination: • Ensure drawings are constructible and field-feasible, identifying issues before fabrication or installation. • Coordinate closely with detailers, project managers, engineers, and field supervisors to align detailing with actual jobsite conditions. • Confirm connection types and sequences are compatible with Sure Steel’s erection methods and site logistics. 3. Change Management and Documentation: • Review and track revisions, RFIs, and change orders for incorporation into updated drawings. • Document and communicate detailing discrepancies or concerns clearly and proactively. • Maintain drawing logs and checker documentation for traceability. 4. Standards Enforcement and Continuous Improvement: • Ensure internal and industry standards are upheld across all detailing packages. • Identify recurring errors and contribute to team improvement strategies. • Support standardization efforts and training for in-house and third-party detailers. 5. Cross-functional Communication: • Serve as a key liaison between engineering, detailing, fabrication, and field teams. • Participate in coordination meetings to clarify detailing intent and resolve drawing issues before they impact the schedule. • Assist in the review of erection sequencing plans and lift diagrams as needed. Qualifications Qualifications: • 5+ years of experience in steel detailing, with at least 2 years in a checking or QA/QC role. • Expertise in interpreting structural and architectural drawings, shop drawings, and erection plans. • Strong knowledge in Division 5 structural is preferred and AISC Manual of Steel Construction and related standards. • Proficiency in Tekla Structures, SDS/2, AutoCAD, or similar detailing software. • Strong communication skills and a proactive, detail-oriented mindset. • Ability to identify constructability issues and recommend practical solutions. • Familiarity with steel fabrication and erection processes preferred. • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
