EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Bachelor’s Degree. Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience in a STEM-related content area.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Frequent sitting, walking, bending, grasping, fingering, repetitive motion, and reaching. Occasional standing, stooping, crouching, and driving. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently. Requires timely and regular adherence to established work schedules. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Participates in STEM educator certification program (if needed). Possesses a valid driver’s license. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.

Responsibilities

Under supervision of the Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction, the K-12 STEM Specialist provides leadership for implementing and facilitating K-12 STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programs, instruction, and professional learning. The specialist ensures resources are available for use by administrators, teachers and students . In addition, the position provides the necessary professional learning and coaching requirements to meet the STEM goals of Portsmouth Public Schools (PPS).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)

  • Develops and facilitates professional learning and coaching focused on K12 STEM, including the use of inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, and problem-based learning in the classroom.
  • Uses appropriate resources and technology to promote the implementation of STEM instruction throughout science, math, and CTE classrooms.
  • Coordinates the alignment of the division’s STEM strategies and resources with the division’s content curriculum.
  • Collaborates with content coordinators and the instructional technology coordinator to ensure sustainability of STEM education in PPS.
  • Assists schools with the planning of STEM activities and family engagement related to STEM.
  • Works with the CTE coordinator to expand STEM pathways through high school.
  • Works to expand and implement extracurricular STEM programs at all levels, including VEX Robotics, First Robotics, and Chrome Clubs.
  • Seeks out, applies for and monitors implementation progress of STEM-related grants.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction.
