Primary objective
Ensure patient safety through infection control and prevention practices and effective reprocessing of reusable medical devices and
equipment in accordance with the Australian Sterilisation (AS5369: 2023),the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS)
Standards and the Department of Health Guidelines and Policies under the direction of the CSD Manager.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high quality service through decontamination and sterilisation of reusable medical devices to Alice Springs Hospital Operating
Theatres, other clinical areas and external clients.
2. Process reusable medical devices according to AS5369: 2023, including inspecting, packaging, batching, labelling and barcoding items
processed to maintain department’s tracking and traceability system.
3. Undertake functional or biological tests on sterilising, decontamination and other equipment used for reprocessing and validating
process cycles.
4. Follow service quality standards, work health and safety and infection control and prevention policies and procedures relating to the
role in order to maintain safe workplace for all.
5. Compliance with Worksafe principles (e.g., manual and chemical handling and storage, using personal protective equipment) and assist
in maintaining safe workplace such as reporting any hazards, incidents, accidents and unsafe work practices or equipment.
6. Compliance with Quality Management policies and procedures, participation in quality assurances and commitment to continuous
improvement activities and processes.
7. Assist with other general tasks and duties required for the smooth running of the sterilising department and when required by the
senior team members or the Manager.
8. Working effectively as a competent member of the central sterilising team on a rotating roster that includes weekends, public holidays
and on-calls.
9. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Willingness to undertake a Certificate III in Health Service Assistance (Sterilisation Services) or equivalent.
2. Demonstrated ability to apply infection control principles, manage wastes and biohazards as it relates to sterilising department.
3. Demonstrated experience in sterilising department or similar environment in hospital or other industries.
4. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of the team, provide constructive feedbacks and support productive working relationships.
5. Time management skills with abilities to plan, organize and prioritise workloads and work flows.
6. Customer services, communication and interpersonal skills to effectively liaise with health care workers and service users from diverse
backgrounds whilst maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
7. Demonstrated initiative, reliability, punctuality and hands-on with application of theoretical knowledge for provision of effective
service delivery by meeting customer turnaround times.
8. High level of understanding and ability to apply workplace WHS requirements in sterilising services.
9. Availability, flexibility, adaptability and willingness to work shift duties and in all reprocessing areas as per rostered shifts.
Desirable
1. Sound computer skills and ability to learn processes required for operation of an electronic scanning system.
2. Willingness to support with training or mentoring of co-workers in current and new processes in sterilising department.
