Job Description:
The Stockroom Coordinator is responsible for directing the distribution of chemicals and supplies to students and Instructors as needed in the Chemistry teaching laboratories and determining equipment and supply needs for college chemistry classes. The Stockroom Coordinator also works in conjunction with the teaching faculty to ensure that all chemicals, supplies, equipment, and instruments needed to conduct laboratory courses are available. This stockroom coordinator is responsible for all teaching laboratory courses currently housed in 3rd floor of Williams Hall.
Job Duties:

20% Administrative:

  • Maintains original records of glassware, equipment and chemicals issued to each student enrolled during a given semester. Updates these records and preserves original files.
  • Maintains current safety documentation for chemicals used in the 3rd floor Williams Teaching Labs.
  • Accurately maintains the safety/environmental management database used at LSU for all chemicals in 3rd floor Williams labs and Stockroom.
  • Maintains inventory control on all lab desk drawers for items including laboratory glassware and personal protective equipment.
  • Coordinates the student Check-In and Check-Out assignments of lab drawers for the laboratory courses.
  • Maintains inventory of drawers and keys for each laboratory room. Assigns sets of drawers/keys for each section of each laboratory course.

30% Technical Expertise & Chemical Knowledge:

  • Ensures that all chemicals in the teaching labs and in the stockroom are stored according to the appropriate safety protocols.
  • Ensures that safe chemical handling procedures are followed. Trains solutions assistants in proper chemical safety procedures and use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Supervises Solution Assistants (or when necessary, prepares) the chemicals needed for the teaching laboratories on 3rd floor Williams
  • Collects and classifies chemical waste products from the teaching labs and stockroom in the appropriate manner.
  • Prepares appropriate labels and paperwork to arrange for waste pickup from Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). Distributes chemicals, glassware and other needed supplies for teaching labs.
  • Stays current on all appropriate laboratory safety training administered by EHS.

30% Purchases:

  • Monitors stock of chemicals, equipment, and consumables in stockroom during each semester.
  • Orders chemicals, equipment, and consumables needed for the operation of the teaching laboratories. Consults with faculty to ensure the appropriate grade/purity of chemicals to be ordered and the supply of equipment to be maintained.
  • When appropriate, works with the Stockroom Manager of the General Chemistry Laboratory to combine orders to obtain the best price of supplies, such as goggles.
  • When appropriate, obtain quotes on large orders to obtain the best prices for orders.
  • Works with Chemistry Department Accounting personnel to ensure timely order and account reconciliations.
  • Prepares charge details to be applied to each student’s laboratory usage deposit.

15% Facilities and Instruments:

  • Supervises the maintenance of the teaching labs and stockroom. Works with the building manager to report problems and request work orders. Follows through with the building coordinator on the completion of work orders.
  • Runs periodic samples (according to a timeline set by faculty using the appropriate protocols) on instruments to ensure the instrument is in working order and trouble-shoot any problems.
  • Ensures all appropriate instruments and equipment are available for use before needed in the experiments of the 3rd floor teaching labs.
  • As appropriate or at request of instructor, trains Teaching Assistants on operation of instrument.

5% Other

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physical, biological sciences or related field
