Job Title:Store Manager – Lumber Buying & Operations

Location:Greater Toronto Area (GTA)

Employment Type:Full-time

Compensation:$125,000 per year + performance bonus (approximately 10%)

Status:Priority search – ideally placed by November/December

TalentSphere is recruiting on behalf of a well-established building materials retailer in the GTA for a Store Manager with strong lumber buying experience. This is a key leadership opportunity for a results-driven professional who combines purchasing expertise with the ability to lead a team in a positive, customer-focused environment.

About the Role

We are seeking a Manager who will oversee lumber and building materials purchasing while managing day-to-day store operations. The ideal candidate will have solid experience buying from major distributors, strong staff management skills, and a leadership style focused on motivation, retention, and creating a positive workplace culture. This role emphasizes respectful leadership, excellent customer service, and team development (moving away from traditional “old-school” management approaches). Preference will be given to Portuguese-speaking candidates.

Key Responsibilities 

• Manage the purchasing of lumber and building materials, working with major distributors (including Dolman, Goodfellow, Stella-Jones, and others)
• Oversee day-to-day store operations, including openings, closings, and overall store performance
• Lead, schedule, and develop staff while fostering a positive and supportive work environment
• Motivate and retain team members through effective leadership and coaching
• Drive strong customer service standards across the store
• Monitor inventory levels, pricing, and supplier relationships to ensure product availability and profitability
• Collaborate with ownership and the broader team to support business growth and operational excellence

Requirements 

• Proven experience in lumber buying/purchasing within the building materials industry
• Strong knowledge of key distributors such as Dolman, Goodfellow, Stella-Jones, and similar suppliers
• Demonstrated staff management experience, including scheduling, coaching, and team leadership
• Ability to create and maintain a positive work environment focused on motivation and retention
• Solid understanding of store operations, including openings/closings and daily workflow
• Excellent communication, organizational, and customer-service skills
• Reliable transportation and ability to work full-time in the GTA

Ideal Background

Candidates currently or previously working in management or senior buying roles at Home Hardware, Rona, Home Depot, or similar independent building supply / lumber retailers in the GTA are strongly encouraged to apply.
